Trade paperback (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Traditionally, a trade paperback will reproduce the stories at the same size as they were originally presented in comic book format; recently, however, certain trades have been published in a smaller, "digest"-sized format, similar in size to a paperback novel.
For many years, trade paperbacks were mainly used to reprint older comic-book stories that were no longer available to the average reader, when original copies of those stories were scarce and hard to find, and often very expensive when found due to their rarity.
As the trade paperback versions are usually cheaper than buying the individual comics and presented without any advertisements at all, many comic book fans choose to hold off on purchasing the individual issues and only follow the stories when they come out in trade.

Trade Paperbacks, Hardcovers, and Graphic Novels
Usually, a trade paperback will comprise a single story-arc of between four and six issues of a particular title.
Alternately, it might be a part of a larger story, or an otherwise related set of stories, possibly from different titles relating to a single important event.
The term "trade" paperback refers to the size of the book, which is usually a softcover about the size of a regular comic book, seven by ten inches, as opposed to a regular paperback prose book.

Are Trade Paperbacks the Future of Comics?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A parent might be willing to buy their child a $2.50 comic book, but the $12.95 minimum for a trade paperback may be a different matter altogether.
Nevertheless, Vertigo announced the first trade paperback before the first story arc was even finished, a move which certainly contributed to poor sales of the monthly issues.
The solution to this situation is that comics publishers will have to be ready and willing to publish a trade paperback featuring mutliple stand-alone stories, something they seem reluctant to do at the moment.
