Trade union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since the publication of the History of Trade Unionism (1894) by Sidney and Beatrice Webb, the predominant historical view is that a trade union "...is a continuous association of wage earners for the purpose of maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment" (Webb).
Trade unions are often accused of benefiting the insider workers, those having a secure job and high productivity, at the cost of the outsider workers, those who are unemployed or at the risk of unemployment or who are not able to get the job that they want in a particular field.
The legal status of trade unions in the United Kingdom was established by a Royal Commission in 1867, which agreed that the establishment of the organisations was to the advantage of both employers and employees.

DANNY Roberts' vision of the trade union leader of the 21st century is not confined to the image of the militant figure manning the picket line, fist raised in defiance, bullhorn in tow.
Although he concedes that there are trade unionists taking advantage of opportunities to upgrade their training, Roberts notes that it has been a long time since the unions have gone directly into the universities to recruit leadership.
Trade unions, she says, will have to be innovative and use such avenues as their community organisations as the focal point for informing and organising their membership.

The face of UK trade unionism is changing, according to evidence published by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Trade unionists today (August 1997), based on analysis of the autumn 1996 Labour Force Survey.

Today's typical trade unionist, by contrast, is a person whom the TUC labels "Dan from Durham" - a (male) doctor or lawyer in his 40s, working full time and living in the North of England.

Even in the most advanced countries of Europe it can still be seen that the exposure of abuses in some backward trade, or in some forgotten branch of domestic industry, serves as a starting-point for the awakening of class-consciousness, for the beginning of a trade union struggle, and for the spread of socialism.
As a matter of fact, the exposures merely dealt with the relations between the workers in a given trade and their employers, and all they achieved was that the sellers of labour power learned to sell their “commodity” on better terms and to fight the purchasers over a purely commercial deal.
This struggle is necessarily a trade union struggle, because working conditions differ greatly in different trades, and, consequently, the struggle to improve them can only be conducted on the basis of trade organisations (in the Western countries, through trade unions; in Russia, through temporary trade associations and through leaflets, etc.).
