In creating his new cocktail, Trader Vic employed what was becoming the ever-present hallmark of all his recipes: a light touch, meant to enhance but never disguise nor overpower the fine original taste of the main ingredients.
Trader Vic truly "wrote the book" on tropical mixed drinks and Polynesian-style food: Doubleday published Trader Vic's Book of Food and Drink in 1946 and the first of several editions of his Bartender's Guide in 1947.

(December 10, 1902 - October 11, 1984) was the founder of a chain of Polynesian-themed restaurants that bore his nickname, Trader Vic, and one of two people who claimed have invented the Maitai.
During the Tiki boom of the '50s and '60s, as many as 25 Trader Vic's restaurants were in operation around the world, all featuring the popular mix of south-seas artifacts, unique cocktails, and exotic cuisine.

Trader Vic’s has played a prominent role in Hollywood nightlife from the time it opened in 1955 to today (it is still the site of huge afterparties every year after the Golden Globe awards); it is hardly a dying restaurant.
