Traditional Norwegian songs (kvad), ballads and short, often improvised songs (stev) are three of the biggest types of folk music.
Norway shares the Nordic dance music tradition with its neighbouring countries, where the Hardanger fiddle (hardingfele), the most distinctive instrument in Norwegian folk music, is used along with other fiddles like the standard violin and Setesdals-fele.
Traditional dances are normally referred to as bygdedans (village dance) and include halling, pols, springleik, rull, gangar and springar.

In March 1995 the Gordon Ekvall Tracie Music Library was established as a research archive of traditional Nordic music and dance, available to the public at Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle.
Like much of the commercially recorded music in the archives, many of the Library's books, monographs, periodicals, sheet music, and dance notes are now out of print and have become all the more valuable to researchers.
One of the Library's particular missions is the continuing documentation of the Nordic folk music and dance scene in the Pacific Northwest.

In dealing with traditional music and dance it should be noted that names of dances and dance rhythms often differ considerably, both among and within the various lands of origin.
To further complicate the matter, when dance music is published in record form, the titling of the selections may have very little to do with the dances per se.
Often the dance rhythm may be indicated in the title, such as vals, schottis, polka, polska, etc., but this may be of little help, even misleading, in determining the exact step or dance best suited to that particular rendition of the music.

Many of the traditional tunes have been given new names, but the liner notes identify each type of tune and name the musician in whose manner the melody is played.
The stories are often funny; a pols renamed "Blää!" is described as "bad music for bad people." Fiddlers in particular will wish that the liner notes went into more detail about which fiddles appear on which tracks; everything from the "regular" fiddle to the moraharpa (the ancestor of today's nyckelharpa) shows up.

The Nordic Roots Festival is a co-production of NorthSide and the Cedar Cultural Centre, specifically focused on the presentation of "new Nordic" folk music and dance.
Värttinä has been forced to cancel their Nordic Roots Festival appearance on Saturday, April 22 due to illness (six of the ten band members have influenza and have been strongly advised by their doctors not to fly).
