Black Goat Cabal: traditional Satanism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
By "traditional Satanism" we mean Satanism in the traditional primary sense of the word "Satanism" -- the worship of Satan as a deity.
The label "traditional Satanism" has also been used by some who hold that Satanists should be involved in extremist politics, terrorism, or other violent criminal activity.
Other terms for "traditional Satanism" include "Devil worship," "theistic Satanism," "spiritual Satanism," and "Diabolatry." Some of us may consider one or more of these other labels to be more accurate or otherwise more appropriate than "traditional Satanism." But "traditional Satanism" is the term apparently preferred by most.

Originally in Judeo-Christian traditions, Satan was seen as a part of creation, embodying the principle that one could choose contrary to God's wishes, and thus empowering the potential for free will and defiance.
Satan is also referred to as the Devil from the Greek "diabolos" (Διαβολος), meaning "slanderer" or "one who accuses falsely" (derived from the verb "dia-ballô" (δια-βαλλω) which most literally means "to throw across" or "carry something over").
Religious Satanism is often similar in outlook and attitude to Philosophical Satanism, though it is generally a prerequisite that the Satanist accept a theological and metaphysical canon involving one or more God(s) who are either Satan in the strictest, Abrahamic sense, or specially created to identify with or represent the practitioner.

Traditional Satanists are those Satanists who believe in Satan as a literal existent being, whether human, spirit, alien, or god.
Sometimes Satan is viewed as a friend -- a comrade, a fellow being which is an equal to be befriended just like any other person or being.
Regardless of what the Traditional Satanist defines him/her as, the commonality therein is that Satan is a definable (if vaguely) external force which has an existence and usually consciousness in and of itself.
