The United States is comprised of fifty states and a national capital district, as well as a number of territories and possessions throughout the world.

The standard, or traditional, abbreviations, were widely used on mailing addresses and in other contexts before the two-letter postal abbreviations were introduced.

A state of the United States (a U.S. state) is any one of the fifty states (four of which officially favor the term commonwealth) which, along with the District of Columbia, form the United States of America.
The separate state governments and the United States federal government share sovereignty, in that an "American" is a citizen both of the federal entity and of his or her state of residence.
States are free to organize their state governments any way they like, as long as they conform to the rather minimal requirements in the U.S. Constitution.

State reservations are lands held in trust by state governments for the use and benefit of a given tribe.

Taken together, the results of recent clinical trials and evidence presented at the US FDA Arthritis Advisory Committee and the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee hearing [33] suggest that there is an increase in cardiovascular risk associated with the use of NSAIDs as a class.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently chastised the Israeli government over plans to build a new settlement in the E-1 corridor between the Ma’ale Adumim settlement and Jerusalem, in the first sign of growing US displeasure at Israel's violations of the “Road Map” peace plan.
The US State Department’s call for Israeli nuclear disarmament was met with an announcement from Sharon on Monday that his government would push on with the plan to build 3’500 new settlement units in the E-1 corridor.
The State Department immediately signaled its irritation, stating that Sharon’s advisor, Dov Weisglass, would be asked to explain the decision to build near Ma’ale Adumim in his meeting with Rice.

Most US consular offices use profiles that single out applicants on the basis of various factors including ethnic origin, race, age, gender, the way an applicant speaks, the way an applicant looks, etc.
Judge Stanley Sporkin of the US District Court in Washington has ruled that such practices are unlawful and that the firing of a consular employee in Brazil who refused to follow orders to use the profiles was also unlawful.
But the State Department defended the profiles saying that they are useful in helping the consular officers ask the right questions and to determine which applicants should be called for interviews.
