Traffic light coalition is a term originating in German politics where it describes a coalition of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Free Democratic Party (FDP), and the Green Party.
However, as the Liberal Forum's party colour is light blue, this is a reference to the political similarity between this coalition and a German traffic light coalition rather than to the party's actual symbolic colours.
In terms of the party's political positions, a red-yellow-green coalition may be more likely in the United Kingdom than in Germany as the Liberal Democrats have traditionally tended to economics in the social democratic mould of their precursor party the Social Democratic Party and have worked with Labour in the last two Scottish Executives.

The expression Black traffic light (German: Schwarze Ampel or the portmanteau word Schwampel) refers to the classic traffic light coalition, an alliance between the SPD (red), FDP (yellow), and the Greens, together whose symbolic colors match the colors of most German traffic lights.

On paper, the three left-of-center parties could form a coalition - the problem is that the ideological gap from SDP to the Greens to the Left is kind of like the range from Joe Lieberman to John Kerry to Daily Kos.

Even if you assume he would prefer an SDP-Green-FDP "traffic light" coalition or a "grand coalition" with the CDU/SDU with him as Chancellor it seems he ought to threaten to form the pan-left coalition in order to frighten the CDU/SDU and the FDP out of their insistence on dumping Schroder.
I think one party or another has ruled out every one of the possible coalitions (i.e., Schroder ruled out a grand coalition, the Free Dems ruled out a coalition with the Greens, etc.), so somebody's going to have to change their mind if there is any deal to be made.
As a matter of fact, the Linkspartei is a recently formed coalition of the eastern former communists with a pan-German popular protest movement against Schroeder's reforms that arose last year.
