Traffic light - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Traffic light failure in most jurisdictions must be handled by drivers as a priority-to-the-right intersection in Europe, or a four-way stop elsewhere, pending the arrival of a police officer to direct traffic.
Traffic signals in most areas of Europe are located at the stop line on same side of the intersection as the approaching traffic and are often mounted overhead as well as on the right and left sides of the road.
Upon activation the normal traffic light cyle is suspended and replaced by the "preemption sequence": the traffic lights to all approaches to the intersection are switched to "red" with the exception of the light for the vehicle that has triggered the preemption sequence.

 Traffic Signals
The primary function of any traffic signal is to assign right-of-way to conflicting movements of traffic at an intersection, and it does this by permitting conflicting streams of traffic to share the same intersection by means of time separation.
When properly timed, the traffic signal increases the traffic handling capacity of an intersection, and when installed under conditions which justify its use, it is a valuable device for improving the safety and efficiency of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
It is important that the selection and use of this traffic control device be preceded by a thorough study of traffic and roadway conditions and that the determination of the type of control and method of operation be based on the study data.

All signalized intersections are on a quarterly preventative maintenance schedule.
The process of determining where traffic signals are installed is a complicated one.
A point system, based on traffic flow and the accident rate at that intersection, is used to determine whether a signal is warranted.

 Traffic Signals & Signs
The primary purpose of traffic signals is simply to assign the right-of-way at intersections that would otherwise be so congested that excessive delays to vehicles and pedestrians would occur.
Along arterial and collector streets that have several traffic signals spaced at periodic intervals, the traffic signals are synchronized to provide coordinated movement along the main street.
However, where the through traffic volume is considerably higher than the left turning traffic volume, the benefit to left turning traffic usually does not outweigh the increase in delay and stops for through traffic.

Traffic signals are designed and placed into operation only if they meet certain warrants as required by the MUTCD manual.
If the signal was designed to operate as a pre timed or semi actuated signal, it could rest green until the controller allows the next phase to go green.
If the signal is running in a coordinated string of traffic signals, it will hold green in order to maintain its coordination with the other signals.

Traffic signals are valuable and effective devices for the control of vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.
As traffic volumes increase beyond the capability of other control devices (i.e., all-way stop), it may be necessary to install a traffic signal.
The primary function of a traffic signal is to assign right-of-way to conflicting traffic at an intersection.

 Traffic Signals
If a traffic signal is installed when not warranted, it may also increase the overall delay, increase the adverse effects of collisions, and reduce intersection capacity.
A traffic signal installation may be warranted to encourage concentration and organization of traffic flow on the arterial network.
Traffic studies have shown that excessive vehicle delay results in driver frustration and may cause disobedience to traffic signal indications which can lead to a higher accident rate.

The Town of Gilbert's Traffic Engineering Department wants to ensure that when a traffic signal is installed at a specific location, traffic and pedestrian safety are improved.
Traffic signals are a tremendous investment for the Town.
A signal may increase the amount of traffic into and out of your neighborhood because a signal often can indicate that the street is a through street even though it may not be.

traffic signal is any power-operated device by which traffic is warned or directed to take some specific action.
While a properly placed traffic signal improves the flow and decreases serious injury crashes, an unnecessary one can be a source of danger and annoyance to all who use an intersection: pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
They are intended for use at intersections where traffic or physical conditions do not justify conventional traffic signals but where high crash rates or potential exists and indicate a special need.

 Pedestrian Signals
Pedestrian signals are installed for two main reasons: a high volume of foot traffic at an intersection, or the signals directing motorists don't meet the needs of the pedestrians.
If existing traffic signals meet the needs of people on foot, the signals are easy to see and provide plenty of time to cross safely so there is no need for pedestrian signals.
Signals are times to allow plenty of time for people who are already in the crosswalk to get safely across the street.

If traffic signals are placed too close to each other along the arterial, progression cannot be provided for both directions.
Traffic may need to be gated through this area, to make storage space for vehicles turning into the system from the side streets and prevent gridlock.
The "lead-lag" left-turn sequence is used by engineers to provide green-to-green progression between signals and prevent the main street traffic from having to stop and wait for the opposing left-turn arrow to terminate.

Detection of Bicycles at Demand-Actuated Traffic Signals
Given the high frequencies at which signal detectors operate and the large conductive silhouette of the car, any effect the iron's properties might have to increase the inductance of the coil are overpowered by the induced electrical eddy currents in the vehicle which serve to reduce the inductance of the coil.
But if the traffic signal technician turns up the sensitivity of the detector circuit to detect the small vehicle, it may also detect a large vehicle in an adjacent lane when the sensor's lane is empty.
The author observed the signal operation to ensure it was working properly on demand, rather than on a timer, and approached the intersection repeatedly from the cross streets when no other traffic was coming, after the signal had been green for the arterial for more than 30 seconds.

After the vehicle has proceeded through the intersection, the signal will either remain green for that direction of travel until a vehicle from different direction triggers the detector or revert back to a "resting" phase, where the signal is green in the most traveled direction.
Both modes of traffic signal operation are affected when a pedestrian pushes the pedestrian crossing button.
Pushing the button overrides the signal functions and allows a dedicated amount of time for the pedestrian to cross the intersection based on the distance across the intersection.

A signal head (a single circular indication) consists of an incandescent filament lamp, surrounded by a reflector and fitted with a colored glass lens.
In early signals, more than 600 individual LEDs might be mounted together in a disk formation to produce the circular indication, but these signals did not meet the requirements for distribution of luminous intensity.
Although yellow LED signals also use the AlGaInP technology that red LEDs use, the much higher luminous intensity requirements for yellow traffic signals have made yellow LED signals technically impractical, and as of October 2000, no commercially available yellow LED signal can be purchased that meets ITE specifications.
