tragic - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about tragic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The late 19th and 20th centuries have rejected the concept that the tragic figure must be someone of high status, and written in an elevated poetic manner.
The dramas of the Norwegian writer Ibsen portrayed the way middle-class lives could be destroyed, while the US dramatists Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, and Arthur Miller, and the English John Osborne feature true ‘working-class’ tragic heroes and heroines.
German dramatist Brecht's epic theatre, where the cynical acts of the rich and powerful corrupt and destroy innocent ordinary folk, anticipated many of these ‘tragedies of protest’, whose concerns mirror those of early 20th century expressionism's drama and prose.

So it was quite a shock to me that, all of these years later, I would come to find out that one of ADV Films' latest releases, Diamond Daydreams, is the anime version of a later game in the Kita he series, Kita he ~Diamond Dust~.
Atsuko is a young girl in her early twenties, who instead of going to college and living the exciting life of a student, instead finds herself working in the family fish market.
Her attitude towards the decision seems stuck-up and selfish to the new resident doctor, but Karin holds a deep-seeded fear of operations due to a tragic event in the past.

The frank, unprettified voice of Heng's narrator immediately imparts vigor and urgency to this dramatic story of tragic love set in politically turbulent, early 20th-century China.
Around the beginning of the 20th century, Ears was a domestic slave to the rich and influential Cao family, whose members are so self-involved that they scarcely know how the others spend their days.
Though the older brother is fanatical about protecting the family's place in society, the younger brother, Guanghan, becomes involved in the nascent rebellion against the Qing dynasty.

Diamond Daydreams originally aired back in 2004 and it looks quite good even though it doesn’t feature any flashy or outlandish animation.
Overall, Diamond Daydreams is a fun series that I wasn't expecting to like at first, but after seeing the initial checkdisc and then finishing up this first volume, I've quickly become a fan.
Not knowing that this show was a slice of life type series was the reason for my initial lack of interest, but I'm a huge fan of the genre and this show fits into it quite well.

THEM Anime Reviews 4.0 - Diamond Daydreams
While many bishoujo game derived anime strive to shoehorn various game characters into a single overly crowded narrative focused around a single passably interesting lead, every once in a while one of these shows tries a different strategy by focusing instead entirely on the individual dramatic stories of the girls without a connective male lead.
The show focuses around the unrelated stories (though there is some very minor overlap toward the end along with a few reoccurring visual gags) of six different young women.
While I do not feel that characters necessarily have to be pleasant to be engaging, the overall characterization in Diamond Daydreams wasn't significantly textured enough to make me find some of these more unpleasant characters interesting from a psychological or emotional standpoint.

It is indeed a very relaxing CD, but rather than being just background music, it is very arresting and you find yourself drawn into the music, stopping whatever you are doing to appreciate it rather than mindlessly allowing it to play.
The closing track “Yet Another Tragic Love Affair” has a tasteful use of church bells accentuating the left-hand bass chords of the song, and there is a gloomy film score element pervading the song, which was quite cool.
I highly recommend this CD for those cold winter evenings ahead or the rainy Sunday afternoons when lethargy hits and the stress of the proceeding week desperately needs to be dissolved.

Through Willy’s daydreams of past memories, he realizes life “closes in on him,” because he does not have a steady job, his eldest son and ‘pride and joy,’ Biff, has not ‘found himself,’ and everything is ‘used up’ before it is paid off.
Miller’s style, true to a drama, accents the peaks of the play and exaggerates the valleys to keep the reader or observer in suspense.
