Tragopan is one of the most beautiful birds among the Pheasants found in India.
Tragopan blythii is the State Bird of Nagaland.
The Tragopan pheasant is included under part –111 of Schedule- 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

 Pheasants of Pakistan (Western Horned Tragopan)
The tragopans or horned pheasants are medium-sized montane pheasants in which the sexes are highly dimorphic, the males tending toward crimson on the head and sometimes elsewhere, and with extensive white to buffy dorsal spotting.
Beebe (1918-1922) found western tragopans to be foraging on newly sprouted leaves, and based on the accounts of various sportsmen believed that such vegetable matter forms their principal diet.
Generally, the satyr tragopan is largely limited to the watershed of the Ganges River, whilst the western is associated with the watershed of the Indus, although no major ecological or physiographic barrier separates the two at present.

 Temminck's Tragopan
The tragopans are horned pheasants with short bills and tail feathers that are shorter than wing length.
The males have brownish red plumage that have ocelli underneath and large eyespots that are surrounded by fl borders.
Tragopans are very shy in the wild and usually hide in the trees among the foliage, although in captivity they can be tamed.

Unlike most of their pheasant relatives, the Temminck's tragopan prefers to nest in trees and can be found living at altitudes between 3,000 and 12,000 feet.

We have been able to breed from our Blyth's tragopans using artificial mating methods, but not in such an extent as we have managed to do with one of its closest relatives, the Cabot's tragopans, which we have bred by the hundreds during the last several year.
