The stomach has four (sometimes three) chambers which allow for the proliferation of microorganisms which are able to digest tough vegetation which would otherwise be unavailable to the animal.
The bones in the feet (metapodials) are fused to form a cannon bone, although in Hyemoschus (Tragulidae) this does not occur until after maturity.
As with the Tragulidae, no horns or antlers are present, and the upper canines are present and form downward-pointing tusks in the male.

 Abstracts 52(2)
Six families are traditionally recognized within the suborder Ruminantia: Antilocapridae (pronghorns), Bovidae (cattle, sheep, and antelopes), Cervidae (deers), Giraffidae (giraffes and okapis), Moschidae (musk deers) and Tragulidae (chevrotains).
The interrelationships of the families have been an area of controversy among morphology, palaeontology and molecular studies, and almost all possible evolutionary scenarios have been proposed in the literature.
Our results show that the family Tragulidae occupies a basal position with respect to all other ruminant families, confirming the traditional view that separates Tragulina and Pecora.

RUMINANTIA (Ruminants) COMPRISE PECORA (Pecorans) AND TRAGULIDAE (Tragulids)

Within the pecorans, Antilocapridae and Giraffidae emerge first, and the families Bovidae, Moschidae, and Cervidae are allied, with the unexpected placement of Moschus close to bovids rather than to cervids.

The navicular and cuboid bones of the ankle are not fused, a primitive condition that separates tylopods from the third suborder the Ruminantia.
This last suborder includes the families Tragulidae, Giraffidae, Cervidae, Moschidae, Antilocapridae, and Bovidae (plus a number of extinct groups).
In addition to fused naviculars and cuboids, it is characterized by a series of traits including missing upper incisors, often (but not always) reduced or absent upper canines, selenodont cheek teeth, a 3 or 4-chambered stomach, and third and fourth metapodials usually partially or completely fused.

От малой берцовой кости сохраняется дистальный отдел в виде лодыжковой кости — os malleolarе, функционально входящий в предплюсну (у Tragulidae малая берцовая кость развита нормально).

PAG-VI: MOLECULAR CYTOGENETIC APPLICATIONS IN THE BOVIDAE: CATTLE GENOMICS TO COMPARATIVE CYTOGENETICS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Most recently, we have used bovine genomic clones to confirm chromosomal homologies within the complement of the nilgai, an Asian bovid.
Additionally, we have shown that bovine derived BACs will be useful as molecular cytogenetic reagents on chromosomes of taxa as distantly related to cattle as mouse deer of the family Tragulidae, and bottle nosed dolphin of the order Cetacea.
These comparative molecular cytogenetic data suggest that chromosomal FISH of bovine derived BACs can serve as a cost effective means of developing rudimentary physical maps in many ungulate species.
