Traian Vuia (August 17, 1872 - September 3, 1950) was a Romanian inventor, designed and built a self-propelling heavier-than-air aircraft.
Traian Vuia was born in the village Surducul Mic in the Timiş county of western Romania, near the border to Hungary, now named after him.
This aircraft was called "Traian Vuia 1" and it was a single-plane airplane with a high-wing, which was completely built in December 1905.

Tatin was imediatly interested in Vuia's project, but also tried to persuade him that there is nothing he can do, since Vuia's project did not have a suitable engine and it will not be stable enough.
In 1907, his "Vuia II" airplane, with an Antoinette 25 HP engine, was exhibited at the first Aeronautical Salon in Paris.

In 1907 Vuia performed many flights and after "Vuia-1", Traian Vuia built "Vuia-1 bis" which was equipped with the same engine but was enhanced by his constructor, and "Vuia-2" which was equipped with a new engine built by the French engineer Leon Levasseur.

On this original aircraft, designed and built by Vuia and containing only the third aircraft engine made to that date, Vuia performed the first flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft in the history of aviation.
Between 1918 and 1923, Vuia built and tested near Paris two helicopters, with mechanical drive from the engine to the lifting rotor (in the case of the second aircraft), practically proving that the rotating wing can ensure lift and propulsion.
