The city is located on both banks of the Columbia River, approximately 10 kilometres north of the US border.
According to Statistics Canada, Trail's population was 7575 during the Canada 2001 Census.

American firms established several base metal mining operations in the Kootenay region in southeastern British Columbia just north of the Canada-US boundary in the 1890s.
Most of these properties, including the large Sullivan mine and a smelter which had been built to process copper-zinc ores at Trail were subsequently acquired by the CPR when it built its Crows Nest Pass line into the region.
The persistent technical problems experienced with the lead-zinc smelting processes were overcome in the 1920s and the smelter at Trail thereafter became one of the most important sources of base metal production in North America.
