Skiing - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
Ski routes are referred to as 'runs,' 'trails,' or 'slopes.' Off-piste riding, also known as "back-country skiing", includes unmarked areas within the ski resort's boundaries, frequently amongst trees ("glade skiing"), or usually in pursuit of fresh fallen snow, known as powder.
Trail difficulty is relative to a particular area; however, in North America, similarly marked trails are generally more difficult in Western areas than in Eastern.
(Grooming is a process in which a large machine called a snowcat runs over the slope and smooths the snow, clearing it of bumps and moguls.)

It's a certainty that each one of us has traveled a snowmobile trail that was not groomed or had big moguls or had a sign or two missing and in the worse case scenario all of the above.
When this type of trail is encountered one must ask themselves why might this trail be the way that it is? It must also be remembered that the ones setting up and maintaining these trails are volunteers.
Bumps in the trail can be caused by several things such as part of a rock, a small stump, a log, uneven ground and those little piles of snow left by a snowmobiler who starts up fast or creates excessive track spin.

Trail and slope preparations will be undertaken, when conditions are favourable, with the Rolba 150 and LMC grooming machines.
Grooming operators are responsible for the refuelling, general maintenance and will complete a mechanical faults schedule at the completion of their shift, ensuring the machine is in readiness for the following shift.
All groomer operators must be aware of the snow conditions of the trails to reduce and address potential dangers, and must inform the ski patrol of any inherent dangers to skiers or a change in skiing conditions.

Trails marked with fl diamonds are generally steeper than those with other ratings, and they may or may not be groomed.
For example, you might see a trail rating with both a blue square and a fl diamond at a given resort, indicating that the trail is more challenging than other blue square runs at the resort but less challenging than the fl diamonds.
Because of the lack of standardization in trail ratings, it's generally a good idea to start on a given resort's less challenging runs, as indicated by their trail ratings, to develop a sense of how difficult that resort's terrain actually is before moving on to more demanding terrain.

It's a certainty that each one of us has traveled a snowmobile trail that was not groomed or had big moguls, a missing sign or two, and in the worst case scenario all of the above.
Another factor is that some trails cross over lakes, wetlands or waterways and a minimum of 8” of ice is needed to support the weight of a groomer.
Further, grooming during a snow storm is a waste of grooming dollars because the trail will quickly fill back in, and drifts appear almost immediately so that you couldn't even tell that the groomer had been through.
