The Sellers footage is of course very amusing, but it's painfully obvious which Panther films the scenes were cut from (especially the "Strikes Again" footage, where a number of that film's supporting characters suddenly appear for no good plot reason) and the flimsy plot does all manner of convulsions to fit the scenes in.

Trail Of The Pink Panther - Movie Review
In 1982, Trail of the Pink Panther, with Sellers as the headliner, was released by a studio hungry to capitalize further on the popular series.
Trail certainly isn't historically unique in its use of archival footage to create a role for a passed-on movie star, but it's inarguably one of the ballsiest attempts at it.
A basic plot is created from the old footage, as Clouseau is recruited to find (for the third time) the stolen Pink Panther diamond, but his plane vanishes.

February 10, 2006 - Trail of the Pink Panther is the sixth and final film in the Pink Panther series to star Peter Sellers.
The original plan before Sellers died was to make another film (named Romance of the Pink Panther), but with his passing before the shooting, Edwards opted for a clip show-type retrospective on the crafting of the Clouseau character.
Whereas, the movie starts with the Pink Panther diamond being stolen, it really has nothing to do with the movie besides that the crime scene is where Clouseau is going on the plane.

The release date of Trail of the Pink Panther should be a tip-off that something's fishy here: 1982, two years after Peter Sellers' death.
Trail of the Pink Panther is nothing more than an attempt to squeeze a little more life out of the old Panther franchise, with outtakes and deleted scenes from earlier Pink Panther movies cobbled together with new footage from the secondary actors to make what's supposed to be a complete story.
The only reason to watch Trail of the Pink Panther is if you're interested in seeing some deleted scenes and alternate takes from earlier films; approached that way, and not as an actual film, Trail may have some merit for die-hard fans.

Curse of the Pink Panther is a 1983 comedy film continuation of the Pink Panther series of films started by Blake Edwards in the early 1960s.
Whereas the previous film, Trail of the Pink Panther made use of unused footage of Sellers as Inspector Clouseau, Curse attempted to relaunch the series with a new lead, Ted Wass, as Det. Clifton Sleigh, an incompetent police officer assigned to find the missing Inspector Clouseau.
Curse of the Pink Panther was a critical and box office failure, with the general consensus that attempting to continue the Pink Panther series without Sellers was foolhardy.

Overall, the audio presentation is clean, the dialogue nice and defined and Henry Mancini’s wonderful saxophone-infused "Pink Panther" theme and electric-guitar heavy "Inspector Clouseau" motif (used primarily in "A Shot In The Dark") given additional presence with the increased front soundstage of the 5.1 palette.
In the "Cartoon Theater" section, six Pink Panther cartoons are offered, including the first Oscar-winning short, "The Pink Phink." The presentations are standard full screen and look quite good with solid, stable colors and excellent detail.

The Trail of the Pink Panther is, yes, a bit of a jumbled mess.
However, the one substantial redeeming quality about the film (which gives it a rating of "3") is the oppurtunity for the viewer to catch a glimpse of what "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" produced six years prior, might have really looked like before the film editors or possibly Blake Edwards himself, got to it.
Edwards had a chance to redeem himself and the franchise with The Son Of The Pink Panther starring the wonderful Roberto Benigni as Clouseau's son...but it was too late by then to save the ailing series.
