All of these things combine to make the training officer feel like the department's training is more of a team effort and not solely his or her responsibility to develop, design and implement.
To make it in training, I've found that it's critical to have a vision, have respect for yourself and others, recognize your potential, commit to lifelong learning and, most of all, be positive in all aspects of your life.
Training can be accomplished informally with their crews, through discussions at the kitchen table, while performing routine duties, or in other subtle ways.

A few weeks ago, I discovered a perfect place to watch trains at the end of the beach, a nest of boulders just below the railbed where I watched a mile-long freight slowly round the curve, wheels shrieking.

On a sunny Friday morning two summers ago, I bumped into a senior federal bureaucrat at a marina near our cottage where he was shopping for a new boat, a nice toy he could well afford on his government salary of $140,000 a year.
By the time he had passed his course, Canadian taxpayers had shelled out more than $120,000 in salary and training to produce a senior government executive who, by all accounts, is at least fluently bilingual in all things boating, golfing and cottage related.
With the fluency deadlines looming, government-run training centres are overflowing.
