  Dream Theater
Dream Theater are also noted for their musical versatility and the many different genres their own music incorporates, which has made it possible for them to perform with a very diverse range of acts.
Dream Theater, along with counterparts Queensrÿche and Fates Warning, are credited with reviving progressive music into critical and commercial success in the late '80s and early 1990s after the genre had spent almost a decade in decline.
Dream Theater are seen as a major pioneer of that genre despite forming slightly later than both Queensrÿche and Fates Warning, and they are responsible for triggering a sharp incline in the number of progressive metal bands being formed through the '90s and 2000s.

Train Of Thought is the 7th studio album from prog metal kings Dream Theater.
Train Of Thought is definitely different to previous Dream Theater releases - they have moved into even heavier territory with pounding riffs and dark lyrics, and this record draws on inspiration from various heavy rock bands which have influenced the band.
Dream Theater's usual technicality is present here and there are still melodies which were part and parcel of what DT fans fell in love with, but the all round heavier atmosphere has divided fans and critics alike.

Why, the first CD I ever bought after moving to Boston was a Dream Theater album: An import version of the then-unavailable debut When Dream and Day Unite ($30, no less!).
Dream Theater set themselves apart from the prog wankers by always incorporating more drama and liveliness.
On Train of Thought, however, the only drama is of the action/filler kind.

The thing is that Dream Theater have changed, temporarily or not, and made an album which easily sticks out from all the rest.
"Train Of Thought" is for Dream Theater what "St. Anger" is for Metallica you might say but the difference is that Metallica made a complete mess of things with the final result being an album which sounds like a soulless copy of a nu-metal demo band.
Dream Theater is still a progressive metal band but there is so much going on in this album that it is impossible to label their music any longer.

Dream Theater - Train of thought
When Dream Theater decided to play all of Metallica’sMaster of puppets” and Iron Maiden’s “Number of the beast” the wish of every single bandmember to one day release a classic metal album in that direction became more and more realistic.
Add to this the fact that Dream Theater and Metallica are signed to the same label and maybe it’s not such a coincidence to know that “Train of thought” indeed holds a lot of Metallica references.
“Train of thoughts” certainly is yet another proof of the diversity and talent of the band.

Progressive metal purists have given Dream Theater a lot of criticism for their latest album, "Train of Thought".
The least half of the album is wrapped up by "Vacant", which is too laid-back, too much like the soft bits on disc two of their previous albums.
"Train of Thought" is a very heavy CD, with more of the 'rock' and less of the refinement we've come to expect from this band.

TRAIN OF THOUGHT continues the legacy of the progressive metal legends, with all the requisite superhuman metallic musicianship that their fans have come to expect.
While Dream Theater still remain a band that you either absolutely adore or loathe, It has to be said that Train Of Thought doesn't go into new territory for the band, which personally I don't believe is a bad thing at all.
However, the more I listen to this album, the more it seems to grow on me. Although this is the case with other dream theater albums, it is definitly not to the same extent, as there are tracks that do stand out first time of listening to it.

Ninth studio album from probably the best known and most successful contemporary progressive rock band, who inspire cultish devotion in their fans and derision from their critics in almost equal measure, and who consistently sell a high volume of records and concert tickets around the world.
Dream Theater, although being on the Progressive Metal scene for a fairly long time (it's their twentieth year this year!) have always, and I mean always, been at the top of their game.
After the release of there previous album, 'Train Of Thought', some fans, and the band members themselves, felt the album was a bit too heavy (myself not included), and lacked some of the more calming yet powerful tracks that had had pride and place of other albums.

Dream Theater - Train Of Thought : album review
To Dream Theater's credit, whilst resolutely sticking to their progressive metal ideals, they seem to understand that there is a balance to be struck between actually writing songs and, to put it bluntly, showing off.
When they get this balance right, Train Of Thought, their sixth or seventh studio album (depending on how you classify a past five-track EP that was nearly an hour long!), fair steams along the tracks.
In the past, I always thought that LaBrie's vocals were the weakest link in Dream Theater's chainmail, not because the guy can't sing, but because he had a tendency to stray into an operatic wail that grated at times.

Never being one to disappoint, Dream Theater are back again with yet another colossal disc filled to the brim with epic mind rousing arrangements that are as memorable as they are lengthy (seven tracks at nearly seventy minutes).
As the leaders of the prog-metal scene, Dream Theater are out-and-out notorious for change and, with their latest metamorphosis, confirm that perpetual transformation is inevitable.
Seemingly drawing influence from the likes of Megadeth, Metallica, Pantera, and Tool, "Train Of Thought" is a grab bag of familiarity that Dream Theater has somehow renovated to sound fresh and their own.

This is an excellent explanation of the sometimes confusing and compassionate world of Dream Theater.
The album begins with a track called "As I am" which at 7 plus min's it's one of the shortest tracks on the disc.
Over all, I give the CD about four out of five stars, cutting off the fifth, because I've heard Dream Theater's vocalist do a better job, yes, this disc does show versatility and ability to fit into the mainstream of heavy music, but the fact remains, he's done better.

Dream Theater isn’t one to follow commercial trends or fans expectations, and ‘Train Of Thought’ isn’t about to start doing that.
Instead, Dream Theater forges ahead a path that few are willing to attempt, but all to many will no doubt be happy to follow on from.

TRAIN OF THOUGHT by Dream Theater
Dream Theater makes no apologies for how heavy or technical this album is. It is as if they are saying that they made their masterpiece with Scenes from a Memory and they got their experimentation out of their system with 6 Degrees.

In the last few years, the rendezvous with a new Dream Theater album had been a chance for me to make a comment on their both slowly and inexorable changing of music style.
If the last year, the double album "Six degrees Of Inner Turbulence" had satisfied both the most nostalgic and modern fans, the new effort "Train Of Thought" draws a breaking-line with the shining past.

Train of Thought is tedious in an entirely different way than Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence was.
So, yeah - Train of Thought is basically devoid of memorable melodies (the ballad "Vacant" is laughable and extraneous); and although it contains a few riffs that are pretty potent, most of them sound recycled and, frankly, dull.

When Dream Theater released 'Images and Words,' it changed my life and virtually every recording up to this point had given me nearly as much satisfaction as that recording (minus 'Falling Into Infinity' which I felt was a weak effort overall).
So, for whatever reason, Dream Theater decided to make a recording of every possible scale, time signature, unison run and multi-instrumentalist's solo known to man, all while abandoning virtually any indication(s) of pleasurable song writing successfully displayed on previous releases.
What has kept me interested in Dream Theater all of these years is their ability to display whatever they want musically, all the while writing a good SONG underneath.

Even though Train Of Thought doesn’t reach the best efforts of the band’s past, it must be stressed that it contains some huge tracks and an admirable execution of progressive music that succeeds in sounding very refreshing and involving songs with a special powerful construction.

Three years after Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, it's great to hear that Dream Theater hadn't lost their überheavy edge.
John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess, and bassist John Myung effectively peeled back the pretentious excesses of Six Degrees, turned them in on themselves, and came up with a leaner, meaner but no less ambitious outing.

Band members Mike Portnoy (drums) and John Petrucci (guitar) continue their do-it-yourself production approach, opting for recording venues on their native Long Island (much of the band's album work has taken place in upstate New York at Bear Tracks and Little Bear Studios).
