AVault | PC | Microsoft Train Simulator Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Train Simulator, developed by the U.K. based Kuju Entertainment, gives anyone with even the smallest interest in iron horses the ability to drive one of nine powerful locomotives; ride as a passenger along six detailed, real-world locations, and design custom-built tracks, routes, and driving scenarios.
Among the steam-powered trains are the legendary 4472 LNER Flying Scotsman from England and the Gölsdorf 380, a train famous for its travels along the Orient Express, which ran from Innsbruck to St. Anton.
Covering the electric train category are the Odakyu 2000 and 7000 LSE passenger locomotives, as well as the new Amtrak HHP-8 and Acela Express, both of which are bullet trains capable of going up to 135 and 165 mph, respectively.

GameSpy.com - Reviews: Microsoft Train Simulator
Train fanatics should be ready to hop on board the latest simulator from Microsoft.
Basically, you choose to either create a custom train simulation by setting up things like the locomotives, cargo, tracks and conditions, or you choose a pre-made "scenario" that has all these conditions pre-selected, as well as some scripted goodies, such as weather worsening, broken track, and timetables to keep.
The actual control interface varies from train to train, but all except for the steam-powered locomotives share common controls: throttles, brakes, sanders (to help wheels grip the track in slippery conditions), and reversers (which tell the train to go forward, backward, or neutral).
