Trainer (aircraft) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A trainer is a training aircraft used to develop piloting, navigational or weapon-aiming skills in flight crew.
Some military training aircraft are twin-seat versions of combat aircraft types (ground-attack or interceptor) and some of these are capable of rapid conversion in times of emergency to a reconnaissance or combat role.
A few aircraft modifications may be needed to enable coloured smoke to be emitted during aerial displays for visual effect, but essentially these airframes remain valuable to perform their pilot training function.

Chinese Defence Today - Trainer Aircraft   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The training programme is designed to progress aircrews from basic flight training on turboprop trainers, to advanced flight training on jet trainers, and finally to mission flight training on fighter-trainers or transport aircraft.
The aircraft type on which the pilots are trained on depends on the mission of the unit.
The acquisition of a modern, cost-effective training aircraft is becoming vital to sustain the operational capability of the PLA Air Force and Naval Aviation’s combat aircraft.

 Advanced Jet Trainer [AJT]
It pointed out in 1982 that there exists a quantum jump in skill/judgement as IAF had no suitable operational transitional trainer aircraft to fill the intervening gap before the pilots are taken on to the operational fighter aircraft.

In April 1995, the Ministry had highlighted to Prime Minister's office that lack of AJT was the main reason for human error accidents as pilots converting on sophisticated MiG-21 from Kiran/ Iskra trainers had difficulties in coping with the quantum jump in performance and technology of MiG-21's as compared to pilots converting on Hunters.
