Training Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Training Day is a 2001 film starring Denzel Washington as Alonzo Harris, a corrupt LAPD police officer, and Ethan Hawke as Jake Hoyt, his new green recruit looking to become a part of Harris's Narcotics unit.
Training Day brings up a moral dilemma of committing little crimes to prevent large ones and getting things done effectively even if it is not done the right way.
The movie, as the title suggests, follows a single day in the life of a young LAPD cop Jake Hoyt (Hawke) as he is subject to a single day evaluation by Alonzo Harris (Washington), a highly decorated LAPD police narcotics officer to see if he has what it takes to be a 'narc'.

"Training Day" is a solid step forward for the actor, but there is a long way to go before he can reclaim the screen the way he once did.
For Ethan Hawke, "Training Day" is a far cry from the pretentious frolicking he enjoyed so much in Michael Almereyda's appalling remake of "Hamlet." Hawke is always partial to an introspective, self-absorbed character, so to see the talented actor step outside of himself and play someone of genuine naivete is a nice change.

 Blu-ray Review: Training Day | High-Def Digest
Still, 'Training Day' is worth seeing, not only for the performances by Washington and Hawke, but because for at least most of its runtime, it is an engaging thriller.
The HD DVD release of 'Training Day' was only the second on the format to include a TrueHD Dolby Digital track (after another Warner title, 'Phantom of the Opera').
Whatever its merits as a film, 'Training Day' has made history by becoming one of the first titles to be released on both the Blu-ray and HD DVD formats.

Within a span of one day, Hoyt is literally 'thrown into the fire' as he is exposed to the dark underbelly of the Los Angeles Police Department Narcotics Unit while being 'trained' by Harris.
Within the span of one day, Hoyt is exposed to massive gunplay, violent attacks, crooked drug dealers (such as Snoop Dogg), a loud-mouthed drug haven (Macy Gray) and plenty of foul language as Hoyt must come to terms with the disparaging image that being a cop is not all it was supposed to be.

HD DVD Review: Training Day | High-Def Digest
Sure, sometimes 'Training Day' does suffer just a tad from that slightly processed look, with muted hues in some scenes and slightly unrealistic colors in others (most of the outdoor daylight scenes have that orange "atomic glow" about them), but it is all rendered so smoothly and cleanly that it is hard to nitpick.
Admittedly, 'Training Day' does not sound this consistently amazing in TrueHD, but even based on just this one title I genuinely believe it is an exciting enough advancement in home theater audio that I expect early adopters will really start demanding that the studios release most or all of their titles in the format.
The previous standard DVD of 'Training Day' featured a fairly decent in unexceptional batch of extras, and they are all ported over for this new HD DVD release.

Ethan Hawke stars in Training Day as ambitious LAPD officer Jake Hoyt, who dreams of getting off patrol duty and becoming a detective — which is possible, with the right ticket.
Fuqua also brings some verisimilitude to the picture by shooting on location in some of L.A.'s roughest neighborhoods and using gang members as extras, all contributing to the film's slow descent into a hell where Hoyt must decide who he is, and why he's a cop.
Like David Fincher's remarkable Fight Club, Fuqua's Training Day offers an incisive story of young man's struggle to define his identity by facing his worst fear — a fear that initially approaches him as a mentor, and a friend.

Training Day is the latest movie to star Denzel Washington.
This is the type of film that should leave it up to the individual viewer to decide who is really the bad guy here and just how bad they are, but suffice to say this is a character with much rougher edges than we typically see Denzel play.
This leads to a very interesting first day on the job for Hoyt as he tries to figure out whether he's just being tested, or whether Alonzo is really a criminal himself, or is this just the way law enforcement is done at the high levels.
