 VT 08.5
This trainset was a trainset which was a by MAN rebuilt trainset VT 872 to test new driving concepts.
The trainsets VT 08.5 had only one month of service in the TEE trains because the first trainsets VT 11.5 were delivered at the end of June and went into service at the begin of July.
The trainsets were renumbered to VT 12.6 and were going to ride in the same services as the trainsets VT 12.5.

GAO-05-698T, Amtrak: Acela's Continued Problems Underscore the Importance of Meeting Broader Challenges in Managing ...
Since the trainsets were placed into revenue service in 2000, unexpected problems have been encountered that have resulted in lost revenue and damaged the image of the Acela program.
Amtrak's Acela trainsets also appeared to have had abbreviated testing prior to being deployed into revenue service.[Footnote 10] A fuller testing of the trainsets may have better identified the range of potential problems and defects that could be experienced prior to placing the trainsets in service.
The trainsets have not yet met the minimum reliability performance requirement of traveling an average 17,500 miles between service failures.[Footnote 14] According to Amtrak, the period of time when the trainsets are out of service to resolve the brake problems will not likely be included in the measurement of this standard.

 Faster trains [KTH]
There are several reasons for this: lower train weights, better aerodynamical design of new trainsets and also more advanced electric control systems, enabling the traction motors to act as generators during braking, thereby regenerating electric current to the catenary (contact wire).
For instance, if there were modern trainsets available for every train now running in the Lake Mälaren region, i e westward from Stockholm, thereby replacing older locomotive-hauled trains, an energy saving equal to the heating of 1,300 medium-size private houses would occur.
This study was presented jointly with trainset builder Bombardier on 14 December.

  Midwest High Speed Rail Association
Both trainsets were "unit" trains that used key design principals that allowed for safer operation at higher speeds, while driving out operating, equipment maintenance and track maintenance costs.
While the trainset itself was a huge leap in technology, institutional hurdles prevented it from reaching its potential.
Because of their design, the new trainsets allowed travel time improvements and service levels for many destinations, despite only travelling on dedicated rights-of-way for a portion of the trip.

While conducting a very thorough inspection of the brakes on the trainset, Specialist Thomas noticed what appeared to be rust near a very small mark on one of the rotor’s spokes.
We will also ensure that Amtrak’s equipment inspection program for the Acela trainsets is improved so as to ensure that any such safety-critical problems are found and corrected well before they reach the dimensions that this problem had reached by the time that FRA detected it.

For its part, the Consortium is required to complete modifications to the trainsets and locomotives; train Amtrak staff; meet performance requirements for speed, comfort, and reliability; transfer technical information and third-party contract rights to Amtrak; and provide trainset parts information, permits, and licenses.
Amtrak's internal costs will increase when it assumes trainset maintenance responsibilities; however, since it will no longer have to pay a contractor to manage its trainset maintenance function, it is unclear whether Amtrak will realize a net savings or incur a cost increase from this transition.
For example, the cost to complete major overhauls to the trainsets is largely unknown, as efforts continue to identify the full scope of work to be completed and those who will perform the work.

PBA trainsets are in 4500 series and have split windshields, while PBKA trainsets are in 4300 series and have single windshields.

The new DMUs are based on the electric trainsets of class 2100 (SM'90), but a diesel-hydraulic transmission was chosen instead of diesel-electric.
After many problems, both with the trains and with the new signalling (needed because of the low weight and smooth ride of the trains), the trains are now used in regular service without too many disturbances.
After a long period of debate and testing, the trainsets finally got approved by the German authorities, and the class 3400 replaced the last trainsets Plan X-v in service for NS.

Both Amtrak and the Consortium must fulfill certain responsibilities in order to correct trainset problems and to transfer facility management and trainset maintenance operations from the Consortium to Amtrak by the conditional transition date of October 1, 2006.
Before the transition date, Amtrak is required to create a transition plan as part of the settlement agreement, hire staff for facilities management and trainset maintenance, and determine a parts procurement plan for the trainsets.
According to Amtrak and Bombardier officials, all parties are now cooperating to address trainset problems and to complete management and maintenance responsibilities necessary for the transition to occur.
