Trallalero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though nearly extinct in the 1950s, American musicologist Alan Lomax and Diego Carpitella recorded trallalero.
Lomax later claimed he was blown away, and called it the most significant work in his long and storied career.
There, metal-workers, longshoremen and stevedores sang trallalero, with the practice peaking in the first three decades of the 20th century.

Italian Treasury - The Trallaleri of Genoa
Given that Lomax said he was "blown away" by his first encounter with trallalero and described it as "one of the most significant" of all his researches, it would be astonishing if didn't try to record more of it.
The trallalero tradition is unique in that the usual line-up of tenor, baritone and bass voices is augmented (as you will have just heard) by a male contralto and a man imitating a guitar!
The magic number for trallalero is said to be nine - that is: tenor, contralto, baritone, chitarra ('vocal guitar') and five basses.

Trallalero - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Trallalero groups consist of tenor, baritone and bass parts, accompanied by a contralto and a singer whose voice imitates a guitar (chitarra).
Nine singers is considered a normal line-up: one each of chitarra, tenor, contralto, baritone and five basses.

 CD Review
Alan Lomax was struck by the trallalero singers of the port of Genoa and he was able to dedicate to them many hours of recording during the month of October, 1954.
The regular group of trallalero singers is usually made up of either five or six members, but Lomax mentions, for instance, bass sections composed of up to four singers.
Edward Neill, a scholar who studies and performs trallalero, remarks that when not impossible, it is hard to transcribe these songs because of the intricacy of their parts.

SQUADRA DI CANTO POPOLARE VALPOLCEVERA is one of the eldest team of this kind of polyphonic vocal music in the Genoa area.
It refers first to a male voice singing style: secondly to the section thereof based on nonsensical monosyllabic uttering (in English Tra-la-la) and also to a whole repertoire of traditional songs most of which anonymous.

La Squadra - Bleu de Zena
The practice of singing in trallalero bands probably reached its height in the early years of this century, when the bars of Zena's waterfront played host to informal singing on a very regular basis, and formal competitions between the various bands were great social occasions.
It's hardly surprising that trallalero suffered badly in the fl years of the mid-20th century - but enough of it struggled on to provide the renaissance of the 1960s with a repertoire and a stylistic model.
I first heard them on an earlier record, 'Compagnia di Trallalero' (Buda 92514-2), released I think in the early '90s, and was impressed by a whole CD of a music of which I had previously heard only the one example on record.

The trallalero is a five-part, a cappella polyphonic form, sung by five males taking falsetto, tenor, chitarra ("guitar"), baritone, and bass parts; it derives from the frequent use of "tra-la-la" syllables in the trallalero repertoire.
For a time in the early twentieth century, trallalero was so popular that there were "squadre di canto" or teams of vocal groups from different neighborhoods in cities.

A Series Sampler, to my way of thinking, might be expected to contain examples of recordings to be found in the Series, thus acting as a preview of what's going to be on offer, and also as a possible purchase for those insufficiently interested in, or unable to afford, the whole series.
We hear a song from the Slavic areas of Friuli in the northeast with fiddle and cello accompaniment, a big chorus from the rice fields of the eastern Padana plain in Emilia-Romagna and a charming song from Piemonte with brass band accompaniment.
From Liguria, almost inevitably, comes a trallalero piece; this one is to the tune of La Partenza (heard on the series Sampler), but with different words.

To show representative examples of this repertoire, the project needed an accurate research of texts and musics, but also severe practices were necessary to the singers in order to capture a vocal style quite fallen into disuse, where four / five different vocal parts must be amalgamated and tuned.
VOCI DEL LESIMA line up includes young and old singers, all with solid experiences in other choruses of that area or in the Genoese trallalero.
The result is a strong vocal amalgamation and performances in which heart and transport of the singers are evident.
