Tramp oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tramp oil or sump oil is the unwanted oil that becomes mixed with cutting fluids (coolants).
It may originate from the lubrication oil that seeps out from the slideways and is washed into the coolant mixture but it may also come from the protective film the steel supplier coats the bar stock with (to prevent rusting) or hydraulic oil leaks.
Skimmers are used to separate the tramp oil from the coolant.

The oil skimmer, oil water separator system is a compact oil skimmer that works in small areas and is used in numerous manufacturing processes.
Soluble oil is used as a coolant in the forming operation where it picks up tramp oil from the sheet stock or from the forming equipment.
The collector tube is then drawn up through the scrapers which remove the tramp oil, and is then returned to the tank surface.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oil Skimming and Coolant Maintenance
A mechanical skimmer loves oil, and does not know the difference between the bad tramp oils you need to remove from your sump and the good oils that may be within your coolant base.
Since tramp oils are best removed daily, as they are a food source for bacteria, it is recommended to have one on each machine sump to run as needed.
Coolant-free oil discharge is supplied only on the ADAPT model, as it comes equipped with the Internal Oil Discharge Skimmer, which collects the tramp oil in the coalescing tank for a more defined discharge of oil only.

‘In The Chips’ Is Great Except In The Coolant
He set out the requirements for the dedicated separator: the ability to remove a large quantity of tramp oil; the capability for circulating the contents of the sump at relatively high flow rate to ensure that all three compartments in the sump are cleaned continuously, and a provision for filtering out suspended solids.
The flow rate through the oil separation section can be modulated to obtain a clean split of tramp oil from a slow-rejecting coolant without affecting the overall coolant recirculation rate.
The collected tramp oil is drained from the separation tank by opening the oil drain valve briefly, usually once per day, and the pre-filter screen is cleaned once every two weeks, about a five minute task.

 Coolant Management
The primary causes for coolant discards are the build-up of solids, growth of bacteria, and excessive tramp oil in the coolant.
Since tramp oils such as hydraulic and lube oil are major causes of coolant breakdown and rancidity associated with the formation of hydrogen sulfide, all hydraulic oil leaks should be repaired.
Removal of excess tramp oil from the sump will also remove part of the food source for bacteria that cause the coolant to turn rancid.
