Minh is said to have preferred playing mah-jongg and giving tea parties to fighting the Viet Cong or running the country.
Minh was regarded as a potential leader of a “third force” which could come to a compromise with the North to avoid an armed takeover.
Duong Van Minh was allowed to emigrate to France in 1983, where he lived near Paris.

I met Tran Van Giau during the history seminar I attended in Vietnam in January 1991.
Tran Van Giau next worked with Vietnamese in Thailand and represented the Viet Minh delegation in August 1946 in Bangkok in talks with the French minister (representing Ho Chi Minh's desire to negotiate and achieve peaceful compromise).
Tran Van Giau was among those often regarded as the original "faceless Viet Cong," many of whom survived until the final 1975 offensive against Saigon.

Tran was taken to an undisclosed hospital after complaining of chest pains, according to Officer Charles Shinn.
Tran, who fled South Vietnam as a teen-ager, erected a wall-size portrait of Ho Chi Minh and a large communist flag at his store in January as a gesture of support for normalizing trade relations with the Vietnamese government.
A judge has ruled Tran has the right to display the items, but the owner of the mini-mall housing the store has served Tran with an eviction notice, claiming Tran owes back rent and is disturbing other businesses.

While driving back to the province’s Vinh capital city, the boss had a hunch he was about to be caught red-handed, and told Duong to hide the heroin and a pistol in a bush.

Several months later, the French returned and Ho Chi Minh and his forces fled to the northern jungles where they fought another eight years before France surrendered at the battle of Dien Bien Phu on May 7, 1954.
