The Trans-Siberian Railroad, constructed in 1891, spanned 5,776 miles from Moscow to Vladivostok by steam powered locomotives purchased from Britain and America.
With rail transportation becoming vital to commercial and passenger transit, the Soviet government ordered the construction of additional railroad cars so that travelers could spend the week-long trip riding in comfortable passenger, dining, and club cars, while cargo and supplies followed along.
Virgin white oak trees were felled and sawn into several million board feet of lumber suitable in size for railroad car building.
