 The Roads to Damascus
We remain in the bar with the hikers to hear tales of the trail: giant rattlesnakes almost stepped on, bear cubs in trees, a wild-eyed, jittery wanderer searching for a legendary lost cave that opens into the netherworld.
Bee and I are transported by the hikers' sense of camaraderie, born of suffering along the arduous miles of the AT and alleviated by the sharing of stories, moleskin and oases such as Damascus.
TRAIL ACTIVITIES : For an easy downhill ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail (http://www.vacreepertrail.us) from Whitetop Station to Damascus, there are numerous bicycle rental and shuttle services.

 Mississippi to Oklanhoma on the Trans-America Trail
The trails (mainly what they call 'mile-marker' grid roads) are surfaced either in gravel (if you're lucky) or a sandy-loam type of stuff (if you're not).
From Baker the trail crossed three or four north-south folds of mountains before heading north into Eureka, sand being the main problem of the day, usually when the trail chose to dip in and out of dried-up streams which, of course, were as sandy as hell.
The route through Oregon was nearly 600 miles, but with the exception of a few sections of trail which clung tenaciously and spectacularly to high ridges where the treeline dropped away to either side, it was comparatively dull stuff with memories of Nevada, Utah and Colorado so fresh.

I ride with Sam Correro, Mississippi-based creator of the TransAmerica Trail map and rollchart system, along with Chris and Spice from Georgia, to 12,000 feet and sweeping views of the famously scenic Chaffee County area of Colorado.
The forest is bounded on the west and north by the Continental Divide, and on the east by the Pike National Forest, and includes the Wet Mountains, Collegiate Peaks, Sawatch Range, Spanish Peaks, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
For riding the Trail you don't need a GPS, but it gave me a feeling of additional security, and you always know where you are and where you came from.

Knowing which portion of the trail was ridden by each rider and how many accidents took place, we have established an accident base rate of great accuracy.
Although only about 15% of the TransAmerica Trail is steep enough to be thought of as a downhill, a full 38% of all accidents took place while riders were making a descent.
During the operation of the trail in 1976, two cyclists were killed by overtaking motor vehicles.

Two local examples of this are the Cayuga Waterfront Trail and the Catharine Valley Trail.
The Catharine Valley Trail opened a 5-mile segment from Millport (Chemung County) to Montour Falls (Schuyler County) which connects with the 1-mile segment in the village of Montour Falls.

The portion of the TransAmerica Trail that we were on was well documented, the surfaces of the roads were good, the traffic was scarce, the grades were minimized as much as could be.
Clearly, they had chosen the best route for the Trail, even though there were still a couple very steep hills and some short sections of heavier traffic.
The Trail even managed to stay away from roads bordering interstates, where you have to listen to the interstate traffic.

In writing this report, Bruce has drawn upon his work in helping with the design of the TransAmerica Trail through Virginia, his development of 40 illustrated bike maps, his participation in leadership training courses, and his experience as a leader of 8 group members on a Bikecentennial tour through Virginia.
However, almost all of the participating cyclists were exposed to small group techniques that involved group safety procedures and guidance from a trained leader.
When riding on the TransAmerica Trail, the riders were in an environment that had been predetermined and selected for its low hazard potential.

It's the only state on the Transamerica Trail still to maintain the Trail's route signs, so despite the winding roads and frequent route changes, navigation was pretty easy.
At $8, admission to the bridge grounds may seem a bit steep, but on a per-hour basis it was a pretty good deal.
The Appalachian Trail and the Transamerica Trail -- hiker and biker cultures -- intersect in Damascus, Virginia.

It's a great little trail town in Southwest Virginia, located just 12 miles off of Interstate 81 and within a three hour drive of Charlotte, NC and only a two hour drive from Roanoke, VA and Knoxville, TN, with Boone and Asheville, NC practically in the back yard.
Five major trails cross in Damascus--the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Appalachian Trail, the Transamerica Bicycle Route, the Iron Mountain Trail and the Daniel Boone Heritage Trail.
Damascus also has the distinction of being tagged the "friendliest town on the trail." Originally, that meant the Appalachian Trail, but it applies to whatever trail you happen to be on when you pass through town.

Sam had caught up with us and found her in the middle of the trail, but unlike me, he stopped to help, so his bike was in the trail, too, along with four ATVs holding senior citizen couples and their gray moustached Dacshounds bundled in blankets.
Spices clutch lever -- despite being protected by solid hand guards -- was bent, and it took an allen wrench to fix it, which wasn't in any of our kits, so we had no choice but to wait there for Chris who had taken a more challenging route with John.
Our hotel is run by a French couple so we rested and shared stories over racks of lamb and duck breast and seared ahi tuna and a couple of beautiful bottles of red wine, and slept well.

At Astoria, we switch to the TransAmerica Route, Section 1 from Astoria to Eugene.
Onto TransAmerica, Section 2, with a quick side trip from Sisters, Oregon, to Bend to see Ric's brother and his wife.
I leave the Lewis and Clark trail tomorrow, (September 4?) for Fargo, ND, and then pick up the Adventure Cycling's Northern route across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

The Trail follows secondary roads, away from cities (Charlottesville, Virginia, and Pueblo, Colorado were the largest places I visited on the Trail) and it is probably the single most popular route for biking across the country.
In the more westerly states on the Transamerica Trail, many of the small towns open up their municipal parks for overnights by cyclists, and in Missouri Rob and I began to avail ourselves of that simple charity.
It's excellent advice, for although Yellowstone is entirely passable by bicycle (the Transamerica Trail goes right through it), the park's single road is hilly, curving, and often shoulderless, and the full, figure-8 loop that it forms is more than 200 miles long.

That night we tried to free camp on the trail, but the group got separated until too late so we ended up meeting by the Arkansas River and camping there for the night, enjoying a legal firepit and the sound of water rushing by.
Sam grilled hot dogs and the guys inhaled them while Spice (a vegetarian) grilled onions and made portabella mushroom stir-fry for those patient enough to wait, which turned out to be just we two.
"We are going to sissify your trail," joked Spice, as she served up some grilled onions for the already mostly devoured hotdogs.

 Virginia Bicycle Trip Narrative
Most of the trail is shaded, with trees branching all the way over the top.
While filling our tires at a gas station, a truck driver told us that our chosen route was the best, although it was hard to tell if we were talking about the same road, since he kept calling it the wrong number.
We should have rode back to the TransAmerica Trail to get to Lexington, but we decided to save a few miles and cut over to the trail closer to Lexington.
