 The Trans-Pennine Trail in Rotherham
The Trans-Pennine Trail runs from Southport to Hornsea weaving its way through Liverpool, Warrington, Stockport, Manchester, Barnsley, near Doncaster, through Selby and Hull to Hornsea.
The Trail follows park paths and roads to Meadowhall Shopping Centre where walkers and cyclists can join the towpath of the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation and head for the delights of Rotherham, passing Blackburn Meadows Nature Reserve and skirting round the back of Magna.
I am advised that beyond Doncaster the Trail is easy enough to follow but there is virtually no accommodation to be had (believe me you are in the boondocks out there) until you reach Selby way.

Its small size and poor condition reflect the fact that the valley has been very sparsely populated for much of its life, with only two 'boom' periods during cotton times and dam construction.

The Trans Pennine Trail for walkers, cyclists and others :::
In order perhaps to prevent confusion, it seems this one should be referred to as the 'Trans Pennine Trail'; the prior claim of Wainwright's route to be known as the 'Coast to Coast North' is acknowledged.
The newly completed (2002) Trans Pennine Trail spans the Pennines via the Peak District and joins the fertile farmland of the west Lancashire plain to the North Sea coast.
Both cross the country, and not that far apart in distance, but this one (the 'TPT') travels through the heart of the industrial north, along renovated canal towpaths and old railway lines, offering a quite different insight into the countryside and history between the east and west coasts.

 Confessions of a Cycling Officer
For several months I had been the only officer attending meetings with the Trans Pennine Trail organisation who, with funding through the Millennium Commission, were overseeing the creation of the Trans Pennine Trail, a multi-user path between Stockport and Hornsea.
Consequently, the decision was made 'at the highest level' to use all the funds that had been made available for the TPT, including that provided for the cycle route, to do the required path reconstruction on this section.
Naturally, The TPT people and the Millennium Commission (and myself) still wanted to see a quality cycle route across the county, even if senior officers of the ERYC were perfectly happy to see 12 year old cyclists negotiating dangerous road junctions and cyclists pushing their machines along unridable tracks.

 Trans-Pennine Trail
It was a grey Thursday morning when the group from Southport Hospital set off to ride the Trans-Pennine Trail (TPT) to raise money for equipment to go in a unit in the hospital funded by the Ronald McDonald organisation.
The route from York to Hornsea is not part of the Trans Pennine Trail but as York Hospital was kind enough to provide accommodation, it had been decided to take this route.
The first section of the route is part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network and also forms the western end of a trail that eventually finishes in Istanbul.

 trans pennine trail
I soon found the start to the Trans Pennine Trail, testing it only as far as Formby had given me much appetite to explore the possibilities of further a field, perhaps the whole of Sunday for a day-long adventure?
The ¼mi detour gave a refreshing twist to the trail as I notched up my 4th mile southwards towards the town of Maghull in the Sefton district of Merseyside.
After a day or so of hooting ships in the sea mist and fog, forecasters were predicting the best weather of the year, I just had to be a part of that prediction.

The sun was out next morning too when we took the Metro (so cheap and convenient) to Southport to see the start of the Trail, with its tall column with the TPT logo on top, its fish sculpture and its comprehensive information boards.
At the planning stage we sent away for the pack containing the three maps covering the TPT and a very handy little book, this being the official visitor guide and accommodation list (£19.75 including pandp from the TPT Office, Barnsley Metropolitan Council, Kendray Street, Barnsley S70 2TN).

Signing was not good especially on the West side of the Pennines, We did Liverpool to Hadfield in the first day and spent ages route finding in some places.
There are plenty of pedestrians near the built up areas, but I don't think we saw a single horse but they do very obviously use the trail.
