Topic: Transaction Processing Facility

Transaction processing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Transaction processing allows multiple individual operations on a database to be linked together automatically as a single, indivisible transaction.
Transaction processing guards against hardware and software errors that might leave a transaction partially completed, with a database left in an unknown, inconsistent state.
Today a number of transaction processing systems are available that work at the inter-program level and which scale to large systems, including mainframes.

However, when the transaction data files in the restore directory are identical to the files used in the previous session, tp_restore starts with the continuation log it identified in the previous session's.out file.
TPF for VOS Releases 12.3.0 and 13.3.0 addresses the preceding problems as follows: o The minimum wait period always transpires before a transaction is aborted, thus eliminating the performance degradation that occurs when you do not set allow_deadlocks (the default behavior).
Whenever a lock that some transaction is waiting for is released, all processes waiting for a lock in that file awaken and retry the I/O operation, which, in turn, tries again to acquire the lock.

Shipment system including processing of document images - Patent 5168444
The transaction processing facility includes appropriate storage for the document images, an image management facility, and a computer database of shipping transaction data, along with appropriate applications specifying the procedures and instructions for processing the shipping transaction data for such purposes as invoicing and record-keeping.
The transaction processing station may sometimes be referred to as "central" in the sense that it processes document images from a plurality of remote stations or sources.
This assures that after transmission to the central processing station, and during the active period of processing, the document images will always be retained in two separate stores--either the magnetic storage at the remote and central stations (prior to archiving) or the magnetic storage and optical storage at the central station (after archiving).

Object Oriented Transaction Processing in the KeyKOS Microkernel
This action causes all transactions to wait until the checkpoint completes, and is undesirable because it introduces a noticeable delay in transaction processing.
Systems that use Transaction ID's must carry that ID in messages to entities that are involved in the transaction, such as databases and the transaction processing monitor.
Often the Transaction ID is passed implicitly using an operating system level mechanism that is specific to transaction processing.

 Transactional Distributed Shared Memory
My thesis is that the combination of transactions and distributed shared memory is feasible and useful for a certain class of distributed application, especially those applications which have concurrent access to data that must not be corrupted, and need caching to provide adequate performance.
Transaction systems address the failure problem by ensuring that the sequence of actions within a transaction succeed or fail as a unit.
Transaction systems may undo or redo the actions of partially completed transactions to simulate atomic execution in the presence of failures.

ALCS is a transaction processing monitor for the IBM System/3x0 and zSeries mainframes.
It is a variant of TPF specially designed to provide all the benefits of TPF (very high speed, high volume, high availability transaction processing) but with the advantages such as easier integration into the data center offered by running on a standard IBM operating system platform.
Whereas TPF runs as a standalone OS, ALCS is designed to run as an application on top of MVS/OS/390/z/OS.
