Transamerica Pyramid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The top of the Transamerica pyramid is covered with aluminum panels and during the Christmas Holiday Season, Thanksgiving, and 4th of July a bright, white light is lit on top of the pyramid.
The Transamerica Pyramid was the tallest skyscraper west of the Mississippi from 1972-1974, at which point it was surpassed, somewhat ironically, by the Aon Center in Los Angeles - designed by Pereira's former business partner Charles Luckman.
Transamerica's original proposal called for a 1,150ft (350.5m) building, which would have been for one year the second tallest completed building in the world.

Bunker Hill, Los Angeles, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A handful of skyscrapers have been built within the downtown area but away from Bunker Hill; examples include the SBC Tower (owned by retired NBA player and now businessman Magic Johnson; formerly known as the Transamerica Tower) near the Santa Monica Freeway.
However, the momentum died down in the 1990's, shortly after the US Bank Tower was finished; this was partly due to the increase of vacant office space as employers and professionals fled the city's high taxes and traffic congestion, but mainly due to the recession.
For example, all units in the south tower of the three-tower apartment project Elleven were sold out in 48 hours.

The Yelamu group of the Ohlone people, Native Americans, inhabited the San Francisco Peninsula from at least 8000 BCE until the early 19th century; the major villages on the land that would become San Francisco were Chutchui, Amuctac, Tubsinte, and Petlenuc.
Dominating this area is Mount Sutro, which is the site of Sutro Tower, a large red and white radio transmission tower, that is a well known landmark to city residents.
Coit Tower, a notable landmark dedicated to San Francisco's firefighters, is located at the top of Telegraph Hill.

 Transamerica Pyramid, San Francisco
Transamerica wanted a taller building (1,150 feet/350.5m) but the city planning commission would not approve it because it interfered with precious views of San Francisco Bay from Nob Hill.
The Pyramid, no longer the company headquarters, serves as Transamerica's corporate logo and is strongly identified with the corporation.
The "wings" which start at the 29th floor are necessary near the top of the pyramid to support elevators on the east side and a stairwell and smoke tower on the west side.

A new booklet calls the Transamerica Pyramid 'extraordinary.' Well, everybody's a critic ...
This is a tower like none you'll see elsewhere, one that defies the most basic expectations of a skyscraper.
The sharp-angled drama wouldn't be as memorable amid other towers or on a regular block of the grid; instead, viewed from the north on Columbus it's as though you see the avenue's line of perspective take a 90 degree turn and continue up toward the heavens.
All that said, the one part of the complex for which I feel genuine affection is the cozy park to the east of the tower: a cloistered mix of redwood trees and cobblestones, shrubs and grass and a fountain designed by Anthony Guzzardo.

I've read and heard arguments for rebuilding the towers exactly as they were (but better), and I'm afraid that while we do this in spite of the terrorists, we will also come to forget the full impact of what has happened.
