Transcendence (philosophy) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first meaning, as part of the concept pair transcendence/immanence, is used primarily with reference to God's relation to the world and is particularly important in theology.
In phenomenology, the "transcendent" is that which transcends our own consciousness - that which is objective rather than only a phenomenon of consciousness.
Mystical experience is thought of as a particularly advanced state of self-transcendence, in which the sense of a separate self is abandoned.

What is transcendence, and why does it matter?
In religious terms, of course, transcendence means “beyond the world,” in the sense that God as revealed in the Bible exists outside the physical universe of which he is the creator and is not an object of direct human experience or of scientific reason based on the evidence of the senses.
Transcendence is the matrix of basic allegiances that cannot always be justified in rationalistic terms because the true value of any thing can be known only through participation in that thing, not through mere external observation or manipulation of it.
And since the nation is not a transcendent idea, the flag that symbolizes it has no higher significance; it is only, as many liberals love to sneer, “a piece of cloth,” a phrase that perfectly conveys their contempt for the transcendent, and their undying wish to free humanity from its “oppressive” claims.

It does not mean the literal absence of transcendence; rather it refers to the normative thesis, characteristic of the Zen tradition, that what might be termed true transcendence is the transcendence of transcendence, which implies in turn that where transcendence has not been transcended, there is no real transcendence at all.
True transcendence can neither be understood in terms of anything else nor in terms of itself the former because it cannot contain any trace of the relative, the latter because it is, like all things, empty or devoid of self-nature.
From a Zen point of view, transcendence, as the term is usually used, would refer to something relative; but the Zen insistence is on the radically absolute character of transcendence.

Space, like time, is one of the measures of the finite, and as by the attribute of eternity, we describe God's transcendence of all temporal limitations, so by the attribute of immensity we express His transcendent relation to space.
Divine immensity means on the one hand that God is necessarily present everywhere in space as the immanent cause and sustainer of creatures, and on the other hand that He transcends the limitations of actual and possible space, and cannot be circumscribed or measured or divided by any spatial relations.

Divine Transcendence   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The concept of divine transcendence states that God is elevated above and extrinsic to the universe that he created.
In the Judeo - Christian tradition, God is viewed as combining the apparent opposites of transcendence and immanence in that he both transcends the universe and is active in it.
Traditional Christian philosophy, exemplified particularly in the works of Thomas Aquinas, treats God as transcendent in the sense that he created the world; that he has perfect knowledge of all earthly things, which indeed derive from him; that he is infinite and eternal; and that, unlike humans, he is identical with his own essence.
