Transcode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Transcoding is the direct digital-to-digital conversion from one (usually lossy) codec to another.
Compression artifacts are cumulative, therefore transcoding between lossy codecs causes a progressive loss of quality with each successive generation.
It is better to retain a copy in a lossless format (such as TTA, FLAC or WavPack), then encode directly from the lossless source file to the lossy formats required.

 Transcoding - Hydrogenaudio Knowledgebase
Transcoding can be performed from lossless to lossless, from lossless to lossy, and from lossy to lossy.
Transcoding between lossy formats is therefore generally not recommended.

Transcoding MPEG Video Streams in the Compressed Domain
In this scenario, a high-quality compressed bitstream may need to be transcoded to a lower-rate compressed bitstream prior to transmission; this can be achieved by lowering the spatial or temporal resolution of the video or by requantizing the MPEG data.
Another application may require MPEG video streams to be transcoded into streams that facilitate video editing functionalities such as splicing or fast-forward and reverse play; this may involve removing the temporal dependencies in the coded data stream.
Transcoding differs from the encoding and decoding processes in that both the input and output of the transcoder are MPEG video streams.

 Intermediaries and Transcoding
Transcoding is already commonly used in many applications to change data formats, for example to convert a document from one word processor to another.
Business-to-business communication often requires information to be transcoded from the formats and structures specific to one company to formats and structures understood by business partners, suppliers, and customers.
Or transcoders can be implemented as intermediaries, transforming information as it flows from the server to the browser or from server to server.

NFSA Model of Encoding Dacom 450/500 Facsimile Data Transcoding PAGE 4 Field-length values are constrained not to exceed seven, so that runs exceeding l27 with n = 7 will be encoded as a separate 7-bit word of one-bits for each run of l27 except the last, which must always contain at least one zero-bit.
The field length n is decreased by one under the following circumstances: the current run has been encoded as a single n-bit field, and for n in the range four through seven the two high-order bits are zero or for n equal to three the single high-order bit is zero.

Transcoding is the process of converting your media files from their native format to MPEG-2, a lossy compression format that is required for DVD.
Transcoding (also called encoding, especially when video is being converted during transfer from a device such as a camcorder to a computer's hard drive) is easily the most important step in determining the final quality of your DVDs, and the process can involve a maze of adjustable parameters.
Transcoding is faster with CBR because the transcoder does not have to alter the bit rate as it does using VBR.

Transcoding: Extending e-business to new environments
Transcoding, or adapting content from one form to another, is a key part of meeting these requirements for rapid, inexpensive deployment of new ways to access existing content.
Transcoding must be interposed at some point between the generation of the initial content and the final rendering on the client device.
Transcoding is used to help make different types of content available in different formats, allowing new applications of the content that may be different from the application for which the content was originally developed.

How bad is transcoding ... really? - Hydrogenaudio Forums
It seems there is a consensus in HA that transcoding is bad, which may be justified, but in many cases these claims seem mighty close to a violation of TOS #8 since there haven't been many ABX tests for transcoding...
As a general rule I think HA should still discourage most people from transcoding because it does seriously impact quality in many cases, and although there may not have been any centralized tests measuring this, it has popped up enough in individual cases to support this claim.
Most people don't even realize that transcoding is possibly a bad thing, so even though the typical response here might seem like an overreaction to someone who has a legitimate use for it, for less experienced users, it might be something they should learn.

Annotation-based transcoding is a way of realizing content adaptation, and a transcoding module employs external annotations, which are described in a markup language rather than a procedural programming language.

Transcoding technology simplifies production by allowing the use of multiple tools or by transforming a single, editable version of content into a different delivery format.
Managing these aspects allows the application developer to define the transcoding service to be used and the application deployer to define the proper security attributes for that operation.
The Transcoding Integrator for FlipFactory uses the same interface to the FlipEngine that is used by the FlipFactory desktop application, allowing transcoding factories created with the desktop application to be used by automation applications, web applications, or enterprise application integration frameworks.
