The TMR organizes elections, collects the garbage, has courts for civil disputes and criminal trials, employs various ministries who toil away at various functions, and it has educated an entire generation of children who believe that their country is the TMR, not the Republic of Moldova.
TMR militiamen left orphans and children from disadvantaged families who lived in the school stranded without water, gas or electricity, and efforts to bring them food and water were initially refused by the militia, even to UNICEF relief workers.
The authorities in Bucharest condemned the move, blaming officials in the TMR for "stoking a policy of ethnic and linguistic cleansing." The European Union issued a statement calling for the school to be reopened.

It should be noted that, though de jure this republic remains unrecognized by the international community, de facto Transdniestria possesses all the attributes, which are inherent in independent states, such as the Constitution, the national flag, the anthem the coat-of-arms, bodies of state authority, the army, the national monetary unit, and so on.

By some estimates a quarter of the Transdniestrian population has migrated in search of work, many ending up victims of human traffickers, and villages are noticeably populated mostly by pensioners and their grandchildren.
Talks between the Moldovan and Transdniestrian leaderships have been going on for years, and the OSCE is tasked with facilitating a negotiated settlement.
