In the News (Sun 15 Nov 09)

  argolid-transect
When multiple surveyors are present transects are often evenly spaced from each other at intervals of 5, 10, or 15 meters depending on the context.
Field practitioners walk transects to collect archaeological materials from the surface in hopes of establishing patterns of occupation and land-use.
Transect A transect is the line walked during the archaeological survey of a particular area.

 Stream Transect Locations
However, two to three transects were established for the longer streams with greater biomass in Fryxell Basin (i.e., for Canada, Delta, and Von Guerard streams).
Transects ranged in length with a typical transect being approximately 40 meters across.
LOG: Latitudes and longitudes for the start and end of stream transects were obtained from table 2 of the "Ecological Processes in a Cold Desert Ecosystem: The Abundance and Species Distribution of Algal Mats in Glacial Meltwater Streams in Taylor Valley, Antarctica" publication.

VCR LTER Dataset VCR03088 - Root data from pits on Hog Island transect 2
These transects extend along topographic and successional gradients in accreting and eroding areas of the island.
Sample stations were located along transect 2 on the northern, accreting end of the island.
Five stations were positioned along the transect to span the gradation in elevation and to represent major community types.

 Lab 5: Line transect
Proper estimation of density via line transect sampling schemes involves a mix of basic statistical-sampling theory and biological knowledge of the population under study.
Care must be taken to assure that objects on the center line of the transect are seen with probability equal to one.
Note: sighting distance and sighting angle are the measurements most commonly recorded in wildlife studies because the observer does not have to move from the original sighting position to obtain these data (and thus is less likely to "flush" additional animals during the measurement process).

Transect of Place-Types   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The transect is a cross-section drawing used by natural ecologists to describe the discrete habitats and conditions which occur across a landscape.
Form-based coding further enhances the usefulness of the transect, by creating visual and predictable development controls, unique to any given place-type.
The transect is also proving immensely useful in describing how environmental benefits increase as density increases across the transect.

Data Set Code--PTN01 Title of data set--1D/UB Transect Studies Abstract: In 1989, single transects spanning upland-lowland-upland topographic positions were established in a long-term unburned and an annually burned watershed.
Standing crop biomass data are collected in late season at 11 sites along each transect and sorted into live graminoids, forbs and woody plants, current year's dead, and previous years dead vegetation.
In 1992, litter bags were also placed along the transect to assess landscape variation in decomposition processes.

 The Transect
The Transect, a new model for planning and coding the New Urbanism, is beginning to be employed in regional planning.
“The “Transect zoning” concept should be the new paradigm for local land-use regulations, not the least of all because it can be implemented through the familiar legal framework of Euclidian zoning districts,” says Bill Spikowski, a planner in Fort Myers, Florida, who has applied Transect concepts in his collaborative work with Dover Kohl and Partners.
Although the advisory committee supported the Transect concept, she doesn’t believe that it was the most important factor in achieving consensus.

NOVA Online | The Wilds of Madagascar | Transect Investigation
For some species such as certain weeds (like dandelions) it may not be realistic to count the number of individual weeds in the entire transect since their number is so large.
In such cases a tiny area of the transect can be selected where the weed is counted and then by the use of multiplication the scientist can calculate the estimated number of weeds that occur in the transect (since the weed growth pattern is not identical throughout the area).
Return to the classroom and combine all the transects together on a poster board, synthesizing the information into one document describing the area of study.

Pilot region: Duchesnay - Montmorency Transect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Duchesnay - Montmorency Transect pilot region near Quebec City was selected because it represents an important north-south transition in terms of the diversity and variability of the forest cover.
The transect is bounded by the geographic extents 46°45' N and -71°55' W in the southwest corner, and 47°30' N and -70°45' W in the northeast corner.
The Duchesnay-Montmorency transect thus provides a wide variety of climatic and ecological conditions that allow researchers to study tolerant hardwood species (such as sugar maple) and conifer species (such as balsam fir and fl spruce).

transect study   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
For heat island monitoring purposes, a transect study involves measuring temperature changes across a transect, or sample area, often using hand-held devices or measurement equipment mounted on cars or aircraft.
When conducting transect studies to measure the heat island effect, researchers should select a transect that samples a range of land-uses and land cover.
Study timing and weather conditions are also imprortant factors (heat islands are often most sharply defined in the early evening, and strong winds can minimize temperature differences).

ECSOOT stands for Eastern Canadian Shield Onshore-Offshore Transect and is a project of the national LITHOPROBE program directed at understanding the lithospheric structure of the northeastern Canadian Shield in the area of Labrador and northeast Quebec.
The principal objective is the structure of the Proterozoic orogens of this region represented by the Southeastern Churchill, Makkovik and Grenville provinces, and the parts of the Archean Nain craton against which these orogens abut.
The general objectives of the transect are to determine the tectonic processes that have formed the orogenic structures, with particular emphasis on differences between those orogens that sutured pre-existing Archean blocks and those that incorporated predominantly accreted material.

DATA SET ABSTRACT: The species, sex/age, and distribution of anoline lizards in treefall gaps was surveyed by inspection of treefall gaps to compare these data and resulting information on the presence or absence and relative abundance of species in and at the edge of gaps compared with data from the surrounding forest.
DATA SET METHODS: Transects through gaps were not useful because of the limited extent of gaps compared to the average home range of anoles.
The sex/age, species, and perch of each lizard were noted in relationship to the gap opening and fallen tree(s) within the gap.
