Topic: Transfiguration (Raphael)

Transfiguration of Jesus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Transfiguration of Jesus is an event reported by the Synoptic Gospels in which Jesus was transfigured upon a mountain (Matthew 17:1-6, Mark 9:1-8, Luke 9:28-36).
The Transfiguration falls during the Dormition Lent, but fish, wine and oil are allowed to be consumed on this day in recognition of the feast.
The painting unusually combines a portrayal of the Transfiguration itself in the upper part with a scene depicting the Apostles trying unsuccessfully to expel a demon from a possessed child.

 Biography
Raphael was called to Rome toward the end of 1508 by Pope Julius II at the suggestion of the architect Donato Bramante.
Raphael delegated his assistants to decorate the third room, the Stanze dell'Incendio, with the exception of one fresco, the Fire in the Borgo, in which his pursuit of more dramatic pictorial incidents and his continuing study of the male nude are plainly apparent.
Raphael's last masterpiece is the Transfiguration (commissioned in 1517), an enormous altarpiece that was unfinished at his death and completed by his assistant Giulio Romano.

 The Transfiguration by RAFFAELLO Sanzio
The composition of the Transfiguration is divided into two distinct parts: the Miracle of the Possessed Boy on a lower level; and the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, in the background.
The Transfiguration is the last bequest of an artist whose brief life was rich in inspiration, where doubt or tension had no place.
This is one of the reasons why Raphael appears as the best interpreter of the art of his time and has been admired and studied in every century.

Raphael's Fame.Among all the painters of the world none has been so universally popular as Raphael, or has so steadily maintained his pre-eminent reputation throughout the many changes in taste which have taken place in the last three and a half centuries.
In the seventeen or eighteen years which composed his short working life he passed through stages of development for which a century would not have seemed too long, while other painters lived through the same changeful time with but little alteration in their manner of werk.
His body was laid out in state in his studio, by the side of the unfinished Transfiguration, and all Rome flocked to the place for a last sight of the " divino pittore." His property amounted to about 30,000; his drawings and MSS.

 Rome - Raphael's Transfiguration
The picture is an exact reproduction of Raphael's painting in the Vatican and looks as if it were painted on canvas, but in reality it is composed of thousands of pieces of variously tinted stone, which reproduce to perfection every shade of color and every expression of the original.
Even a Raphael and a Shakespeare were not superior to the demands of their patrons, which often reflected the degenerate tendency of the times.
And it may be that Raphael painted wiser and better than he knew when he flashed all this on canvas, and, in his last earthly effort, executed one of the grandest paintings in the world.

 Raphael
Raphael was a painter of the Italian "High Renaissance", considered one of the greatest and most popular artists of all time.
Raphael imitated his master closely, and their painting styles are so similar that art historians have found it difficult to determine which were painted by Raphael, and which were by his master.
Raphael did not paint the standard interpretation of the story, as he combines it with the story of The Healing of the Lunatic Boy.

Raphael, the last of the three greatest painters of the Renaissance, was born Raffaello Sanzio in Urbino, in the province of Umbria.
Raphael's work became luminous in atmosphere, rich and clear in color, harmonious in movement, sculpturally three-dimensional, and perfectly balanced in composition.
He died at the age of thirty-seven, leaving behind an unfinished Transfiguration, indicative in its unusual composition of a further artistic maturation which was all too abruptly terminated.

 Raphael - The Transfiguration
If I understand the significance of the Transfiguration it is in the fact that Moses and Elijah, who had been called dead for centuries, were there shown to be actually alive, and interested in human affairs.
The presence of Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration was intended to teach that, centuries after their death, those heroes of Israel were alive, active, and interested in the same great subjects as when they were on the earth.
Raphael discerned the spiritual significance of this event and gave it immortal expression—Death is not an end but a change.

"Raphael had risen to such heights that Leo X gave orders that he should set to work on the Great Hall on the upper floor, where are depicted the Victories of Constantine.
So Raphael drew and coloured in his own hand all the cartoons, in the exact form and size needed, and these were sent to be woven in Flanders...These [tapestries] cost seventy thousand crowns, and are still kept in the Sistine Chapel." I-313
And Raphael seems to have summoned up all his powers to demonstrate the strength and genius of his art in His countenance; for having finished this, the last thing he was to do, he died without taking up the brush again."

Raphael: The transfiguration. German Epilepsy Museum, Kork
This passage in the Bible led people in the Christian Middle Ages to believe that epilepsy was caused by demons, and this opinion was one of the main reasons why the falling sickness was called 'morbus daemonicus' (the demonic disease) at that time.
In so doing he consciously created a link between the transfigured Christ and the epileptic boy - a symbolic incongruity between the later crucified and then risen Christ and the epileptic boy who falls to the ground in a seizure, lies there as if dead and then 'rises' up again.
It is notable that in the painting, the only link between the two parts of the picture is made by the epileptic boy, who is the only person in the lower half of the picture whose face is turned to the transfigured Christ in the upper part of the painting.

At the end of the left aisle, on the outside of the St. Andrew pier, there is a mosaic copy of Raphael's "Transfiguration," executed under the supervision of the expert Monosilio from a copy by A. Masucci (an earlier one by S. Pozzi was refused) now in the Loggia of the Benediction.
This work was considered as Raphael's testament, since it was placed at the head of his death bed "breaking the heart of all who look upon it," as Vasari wrote.
At the end of the left aisle is the mosaic copy of Raphael's Transfiguration, kept until 1798 in San Pietro in Montorio, whence it was removed by Napoleon; recovered in 1815 by Canova, it was subsequently put on view in the Vatican Museum.

St. Augustine Parish - Montpelier, VT
He planned to present his copy of "The Transfiguration" to the parish of St. Augustine - and he thought it would be cherished all the more by the Catholics of Montpelier if it had the blessing of Pope Leo XIII.
Wood was at work on a stepladder one day that fall - "The Transfiguration" was 12 feet high - when the head guardian of the Vatican galleries pulled him down and introduced him to Monsignor O. Cogiana de Azevedo, the High Chamberlain in the Palace of the Vatican.
In 1897 he expressed his appreciation to the parish by presenting it with a copy he had made of Murillo's "Madonna del Rosario." Two years later, he followed up with "The Transfiguration." Both works were done in oil, and were considered among the finest pieces of art in the state.
