Transformative Learning in Adulthood. ERIC Digest
This view of transformative learning is based primarily on the work of Robert Boyd (Boyd and Myers 1988), who has developed a theory of transformative education based on analytical (or depth) psychology.
Transformative learning has two layers that at times seem to be in conflict: the cognitive, rational, and objective and the intuitive, imaginative, and subjective (Grabov 1997).
Transformative learning may not always be a goal of adult education, but its importance should not be overlooked and all adult educators should strive to understand it, even if they do not choose to foster it.

Without transformative learning, we would remain trapped in the existing patterns of this world and confined to the prisons of our personal past, family history, as well as cultural traditions.
For example, from the perspective transformative learning, empathy and unconditional positive regard are more than counselling skills to be acquired; these are qualities to be cultivated until they characterize who we are and how we relate to others.

From the mytho-poetic perspective, transformative learning leads not back to the life of the mind, as we might find with reflection and analysis, but to soul.

Transformative Learning in Extension Staff Partnerships: Facilitating Personal, Joint, and Organizational Change
Transformative learning results in a major change in thinking or perspective where individuals become more responsible for their actions and more autonomous, and use clearer thinking when making decisions.
The research revealed eight types of transformative learning based on the partner's awareness of their transformation, whether or not the transformed partners took personal action based on their change, and to what degree the partners attempted to initiate change in others related to their own transformation.
Finally, transformative learning was enhanced by a condition some partners called "independence with interdependence." This included the process of retaining personal autonomy yet depending on the other partner to enhance the success of the work at hand.

Transformative learning is an aspect of adult education and experiential learning.
In the conventional sense of self-directed learning about a subject of interest, a library presents an array of resources a learner uses to investigate and learn about this subject.
However, when the subject is one's self, the hallmark of learning is learning through which this "subject" activates a process of discovery and testing and change.

 KDL Projects: Transformative Pattern Learning
Data are used to learn new knowledge within a given data representation, and that knowledge transforms which data are collected and how those data are represented in future analyses.
In propositional data, the possible types of data transformations are extremely limited and the data themselves provide little fodder for reasoning about such transformations in the absence of large amounts of background knowledge.
Thus, work in data transformation has not been particularly productive, and the lack of alternative learning algorithms has made it difficult to consider research in non-propositional data.

EDUCAUSE | ELI | Transformative Assessment
Transformative assessment systems are institution-wide assessment strategies that are based on institutional goals and implemented in an integrated way for all levels (the course, the program, and the institution) to systematically transform teaching and learning.
The fundamental purpose of transformative assessment is to improve student learning outcomes, and "transformative assessment works by providing students and teachers with insight into learning processes and their results.
To be useful in transforming the institution, assessment must be seen in a new way-as a tool for communication about the nature of the desired transformation of teaching and learning.

Transformational experiences are often preceded by a catalyst, an emotionally charged situation, that fails to fit one’s expectations.
I feel excited when I create learning situations that do not harmonize with the learners’ present understanding of their experiences, spurring them to critically reflect on the lack of fit between what they are learning and what they already know and believe (Brookfield, 1987; Nyirenda, 1997).

As opposed to the elements critical for the process of transformative learning, the outcomes indicative of transformation may include Cranton's (1992) framework of three types of change: change in assumptions, change in perspective, and change in behavior.

Transformative learning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jack Mezirow (2000) defines transformative learning as a process by which previously uncritically assimilated assumptions, beliefs, values, and perspectives are questioned and thereby made more open, accessible, and better validated.
Transformative learning theory came out of Mezirow's earlier theory of perspective transformation (Mezirow, 1975 and 1978), which he saw as the same concept as Freire's "conscientization" and Habermas's "emancipatory action" domain of learning.
One of the difficulties in defining transformative learning is that it bleeds into the boundaries of concepts such as "meaning making" or "critical thinking".

LiNE Zine: Unlocking Learning's Power to Transform
In my work as an association learning professional, I use the following simple definition to explain the idea of transformative learning to colleagues and participants: it is the capacity of learning to change the way learners think about themselves, their work and their world.
For transformation to be a possibility, our learners, facilitators of learning, the learning context and the learning environment must blend to create a space filled with the energy of change.
The learning with the greatest and most enduring impact on us is shared and social, learning that involves teams, groups, or communities working together to solve problems, explore important questions or complete projects.
