Kiss Players - Teletraan-1: The Transformers Wiki - a Wikia wiki
By virtue of being the only Transformers toyline and fiction released in Japan by Takara between the conclusion of Cybertron and the live-action movie, it was also effectively the main Transformers line in the country for that time.
The series derives its name from its (controversial) gimmick, which involves Transformers getting "power-ups" when they are kissed by human girls - the eponymous "Kiss Players" - who fuse with the robots and share their adventures.
Although this plotline may seem like a shift in demographics to little girls, it is said that this line was aimed at a much older (and creepier) adult male audience.

Transformers (toyline) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Transformers is the name of a line of toys produced largely by Takara and sold outside of Japan by Hasbro from 1984 onwards.
The Transformers toyline was developed by Hasbro after they met up with Takara representatives at the 1983 Tokyo Toy Show and proposed to combine and re-brand Takara's Diaclone and Micro Change toylines into the Transformers for release in the United States.
Older Transformers come with Robot Points which could be redeemed for special Transformers which were not sold in stores, such as the Omnibots or the Decepticon triplets known as Reflector (which featured heavily in the early episodes of the television series, despite not being easily available as toys).

 The Transformers Archive
The Transformers toyline had been in decline since 1986/87, and when it was finally cancelled in America after a poor-selling range in 1990, the comic's days were numbered, its sales having also fallen until 1989, but then remained steady, if not huge.
The final Marvel Transformers limited series was 'The Transformers - Headmasters', a four-part story introducing the bulk of the 1987 toyline in a concurrent storyline in four parts, before dovetailing into the main series at #39.
Macchio was also the writer of the 'Transformers the Movie' series, and was credited with the adaptation of his own TV script, "The Big Broadcast of 2006!", for #43, though rumour has it that, again, Budiansky had a hand in the final draft.

However, as good as the cartoon and toyline were, it really couldn't stand up to the juggernauts that were G.I. Joe and the Transformers, and the show's run only lasted a few seasons.

Star Wars had pretty much a 10 year gap of nothingness and has nothing except a toyline now as the movies are done (at least until the rumored 3D reguritations are released).
By that percentage, they obviously decided that a Commemerative series and Alternators, a toyline aimed at the TF collector and toy-car collector segments, were viable enough based on that figure.

 Intro TF History!!
In 1984 America was hit with a transforming toyline entitled the Transformers.
The very first releases in the USA had Takara written on their body and were released without the (soon to be trademarked) "rub symbol".
While it had a short life of only 12 issues, the story line took the Transformers to places you never thought possible (if you haven't checked out these comics they're worth the price.....and can be found for quite cheap right now).

A mooted second series of the Transformers Universe did not happen, though many of the profiles would be used as back-up to pad out the comic.
However, sales simply weren't good enough, especially when the US toyline was cancelled after 1990, and the title was planned to finish after a giant-size #75, which killed off Optimus Prime and Scorponok, amongst many others.

Launched in 1984, the Transformers toyline was promoted through both a comic book by Marvel Comics and an animated series produced by Sunbow Productions.
Although the comic outlived the animated series by a number of years, it was the animated series that truly captured the hearts and minds of children worldwide more so than any other piece of Transformers media from its twenty year history.
With the original show's conclusion in 1987, original series exclusive to Japan were created which ran until 1990, and the franchise was later reimagined with the CGI Beast Wars in the late 1990s.

TFans Transformers Community -> GIJoe vs Transformers Toys
With all the Gijoe and transformers crossovers iw onder why Hasbro hasn't even considered to make a toyline based on those stories.
Either Hasbro will compromise the GI Joe size (1/18) to make decent sized Transformers which will piss off the Joe fans OR they will compromise the Transformer element and we end up with large/simplistic toys that the fans will hate.
Sure, you couldn't produce a huge line with every character, but a few select Transformers would work nicely...and a megatron gun shrunk to Joe size that could be kept prisoner in a holster molded on Cobra Commander's leg would be enough of an on-line exclusive for me if we couldn't get a full on line.
