Transhuman Space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Transhuman Space is a role-playing game published by Steve Jackson Games as parts of the "Powered by GURPS" (Generic Universal Role-Playing System) line.
The pursuit of transhumanism is now in full swing, as more and more people struggle to reach a fully posthuman state.
And in outer space all sort of modern crime thrives, barely suppressed by military forces.

Transhumanism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Transhumanism (sometimes abbreviated >H or H+) is an international intellectual and cultural movement supporting the use of new sciences and technologies to enhance human cognitive and physical abilities and ameliorate what it regards as undesirable and unnecessary aspects of the human condition, such as disease and aging.
Transhumanism shares many elements of humanism, including a respect for reason and science, a commitment to progress, and a valuing of human (or transhuman) existence in this life.
A continuing dialogue between transhumanism and faith was the focus of an academic seminar held at the University of Toronto in 2004.

Space elevator - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
However, space fountains and tall compressive structures, whilst possibly reaching the agreed altitude for space (100 km), are unlikely to reach geostationary orbit.
However, most space elevator designs call for the use of multiple parallel cables separated from each other by struts, with sufficient margin of safety that severing just one or two strands still allows the surviving strands to hold the elevator's entire weight while repairs are performed.
Another type of space elevator that does not rely on materials with high tensile strength for support is the space fountain, a tower supported by interacting with a high-velocity stream of magnetic particles accelerated up and down through it by mass drivers.

Transhumanism consistent with Mormonism could replace the more widely held concept of transhumanism's predilection with cyborg-type technological progress of humanity with the ideology that the god-like potential of the mortal, physical body is yet far from being fully realized.

GURPS Transhuman Space is a synthesis of these two visions, a world in which they fused to forge a new destiny for mankind.
It is the region of space outside the orbit of Mars, encompassing the countless asteroids of the Main Belt; the four giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and their many moons; the two clusters of Trojan asteroids; and the icy realm of the Centaurs and Kuiper Belt.

Though Outer Space has become increasingly populated in the Transhuman Space setting, the vast majority of humans, transhumans, posthumans, uplifts, bioroids, artificial intelligences - to make it short, the vast majority of all sapient beings - still make their home there.
With Fifth Wave as its first sourcebook, the Transhuman Space line is off to a great start, and I have high hopes for the future of this setting.
I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the world of Transhuman Space - even if your campaign is completely off-world, there are 11 billion people living back on Earth - and almost any of them can have an impact on your adventurers from millions of miles away...

A New Breed of Space Opera
Space opera, that wonderful genre of rip-roaring adventuring among the stars, was established in the 1920s by E. "Doc" Smith, one of the founders of modern science fiction, and this continued during the Golden Age of Science Fiction (the late 1930s and early 40s).
by suggesting that singularity events can only occur in regions of space distant from the main disc of the galaxy, and he freely admits this was done as a way of avoiding the implications of the technological Singularity (a concept he himself presented to the world).
Transhuman SF, with its rather optimistically rapid technological gradient, is not free from implausibility.

 EN World - Morrus' D&D / d20 News & Reviews Site - Transhuman Space
I think GURPS Space is entirely missable for TS - all the environmental and spacecraft rules are already in the main book, and as TS doesn't have FTL drive and much of the tech described in the former book, there isn't really all that much that would be applicable...
I would be very surprised if Transhuman Space includes anywhere near as much in the way of rules as the core rulebook, and the extra goodies in Compendium I are quite useful.
You don't need these books for Transhuman Space, but a lot of rules in TS are blended in with the setting info, ie rules for CO2 poisoning and low pressure on Mars.

 Transhuman
One of the most intriguing and plausible explanations of why alien species are here or come to visit with us mostly harmless humans is to inter bread with us and repair their genetic flaws, which over hundreds of thousands of years had caused damage to their DNA.
They would be able to genetically modify their DNA to over come any loses or replication issues from long-term space flight due to radiation or any issues with in-breading from their small population of alien space colony travelers.
As science learns more about DNA and as our own species becomes transhuman we will be able to better debate these alien urban legends and their flaws.

Remaining limited to Earth is not only contrary to the transhumanist mindset of expansion, growth and evolution but also downright dangerous: killer meteors, nuclear wars, resource scaricity and customized plagues are real possibilities in the present, and in the future nanotechnology might give tremendous destructive power to very small groups.

Something broad like "Space Combat" would sap the impact of personalities doing their thing on the bridge, which to my mind is an essential genre element.
I think that in a hard setting like Transhuman Space (from which I am borrowing quite heavily, btw) the technology of the ship is a much more significant factor in the resolution of space combat than the character abilities.
The criticism I got after the other set of space combat rules was, "Why don't they just put that on a disc?" While it might be more realistic to have the ships' computers duke it out, this is completely uninvolving to the players.
