 | | Varistors are often used to protect circuits against excessive transient voltages by incorporating them into the circuit in such a way that, when triggered, they will shunt the current created by the high voltage away from the sensitive components. |
 | | If the size of the transient pulse (often measured in joules) is too high, the device may melt, burn, vaporize, or otherwise be damaged or destroyed. |
 | | Another transient voltage suppression device is the gas discharge tube which, unfortunately, has a much higher breakdown voltage, but also a very much higher current capacity, and can withstand multiple high-voltage hits (for example, from lightning) without significant degradation. |
