NTP: Abstract for TR-416 - o-Nitroanisole   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Focal hyperplasia of the transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder was present in one female rat that received 222 ppm and two male rats and six female rats that received 2,000 ppm.
Hyperplasia of the transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder was present in nearly all exposed male and female rats examined at the interim evaluations.
The incidence of hyperplasia of the transitional epithelium of the kidney pelvis was significantly increased in exposed male and female rats and transitional cell papillomas were present in three males and one female that received 18,000 ppm.

Transitional Epithelium   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Transitional epithelium is a form of stratified epithelium characteristic of the bladder and ureter.
When the bladder is empty the epithelium has many layers and the surface cells are cuboidal with a dome-shaped surface.
When full, the bladder epithelium is stretched, the number of cell layers reduced, and the superficial cells are squamous.

 Pathology
The mucosa of the renal pelvis, ureter and urinary bladder is lined by stratified epithelium, the urothelium or transitional epithelium (from the erroneous concept that this epithelium constitutes a transition between stratified squamous and columnar epithelia).
The epithelium is 2-3 cells thick in the pelvis, up to 5 in the ureter and up to 7 cells thick in the bladder in the undistended state.
Transitional epithelium is a stratified epithelium characterized by the fact that the most apical cells are the roundest and largest in diameter.

 TRANSITIONAL EPITHELIUM
Transitional epithelium contains cells that are flattened and cells that are cuboidal; hence the name "transitional".
Another way to remember transitional epithelium is that the cells have the capacity to stretch and flatten so the calyx and bladder can expand.
Note that in the bladder transitional epithelium (shown below) the cells nearest the apex are rounded.

Transitional epithelium is the specialized epithelium associated with urinary structures.
Again you will note differences in thickness of the epithelium on the two specimens, this epithelium however is not covered by a cellular material as was seen in the examples of stratified squamous epithelium.

Transitional cell carcinoma of the right and left ovary with metastases to the omentum, serosa of the small intestine, serosa/adventitia and wall of rectosigmoid colon, posterior pelvic peritoneum, posterior cervical region and lateral portions of uterus, and spleen.
On the other hand, some experts claim that transitional cell carcinoma of the ovary is a variant of serous carcinoma with pseudopapillary pattern, although the current view favors that transitional cell carcinoma of the ovary is a separate entity.
Immunohistochemical and pathological studies appear to favor that transitional cell carcinoma of ovary is one subtype of ovarian surface epithelial carcinomas, originating in celomic epithelium (as proposed by Austin and Norris 1987), and is different from urothelial carcinoma of urinary bladder.

Epithelium   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Transitional epithelium is a form of stratified epithelium lining the urinary bladder and part of the urinary tract.
Transitional epithelium can be recognized by the large rounded epithelial cells lining the lumen (in contrast to other stratified epithelia, where such surface cells are squamous).
Goblet cells are found scattered in the heterogeneous epithelium of mucous membranes, for example, in the pseudostratified epithelium of the respiratory tract or in the absorptive epithelium of the small and large intestine.

Cloacal Papillomas in Psittacine Birds: A Retrospective Histopathologic Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Transitional epithelium was defined as stratified epithelium with areas of adjacent squamous and columnar morphology, with neither predominating in the papilloma.
The mean mitotic index for papillomas with transitional epithelium was 5.2, with a range of zero to sixteen.
The presence of squamous and transitional epithelium in the majority of cases reflects clinical observations that cloacal papillomas commonly arise at or near the mucocutaneous junction adjacent to the vent.

It is in direct continuity with the simple epithelium of the ducts and collecting tubules of the kidney and the stratified squamous epithelium of the urethra.

Simple cuboidal epithelium occurs in small excretory ducts of many glands, the follicles of the thyroid gland, the tubules of the kidney and on the surface of the ovaries.
Transitional epithelium is found exclusively in the excretory urinary passages (the renal calyces and pelvis, the ureter, the urinary bladder, and part of the urethra).
The shape of the cells in the surface layer of a transitional epithelium varies with the degree of distension of the organs whose lumen is lined by this type of epithelium.

Bladder Cancer - What is Cancer?
As discussed above, the bladder wall has several tissue layers- the transitional epithelium, the muscular layer, and the fat layer-each separated from one another by fibrous bands known as connective tissue.
In bladder cancer, the most common cell type to become a cancer is the transitional epithelial cell, designated as transitional cell carcinoma or TCC.
For example, cells that compose a low grade TCC may appear very similarly to surrounding normal transitional epithelium, except that the cancer transitional cells invade.
