Translation (geometry) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Euclidean geometry, a translation, or translation operator, is an affine transformation of Euclidean space which moves every point by a fixed distance in the same direction.
If T is a translation, then the image of a subset A under the function T is the translate of A by T.
Since a translation is an affine transformation but not a linear transformation, homogeneous coordinates are normally used to represent the translation operator by a matrix.

Multi-booting Solaris and other operating systems
Extended CHS addressing adds a translation step that changes the way the geometry appears in order to break the 504 MB barrier, but the addressing is still done in terms of cylinder, head and sector numbers, however, they are just translated one or more times before they get to the actual disk itself.
The translated geometry is still what is presented to the operating system for use in Int 13h calls.
The difference is that when using ECHS the BIOS translates the parameters used by these calls from the translated geometry to the drive's logical geometry.

Working Magic with Translation and Healing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
Unlike other types of translations, there is usually no healing involved with feature-based conversions, because the writing of the features is like reusing a recipe--albeit sometimes with substitute ingredients.
In general, when translation companies employ APIs, it means that when the MCAD software is updated, the translators will still work, usually with minimal rewriting.
Translators that are reverse-engineered are usually more accurate, because in general the software is written specifically to convert files from one system to another.

 Translation Transform
Translation (often a parallel translation) P' of P by V is the point such that PP' equals the vector V. In other words, P' is located at the distance from P equal to the length of V and in the same direction.
On the other hand, if S' is known to be a translated image of S, then for any points P and Q in S, Therefore, the translation that maps S on S' is uniquely determined by any pair of points P/P'.
Translation maps parallel lines onto parallel lines and, moreover, a line and its image are also parallel.

Translation of the VRML file in Figure 3.4.1a to the OBJ file in Figure 3.4.1b is mechanically lossless since both grammars can express the shape using the same mechanism.
Translation from the VRML file to the OBJ file requires that the grammar translator expand the VRML box, creating polygons for the six sides of the box and writing those polygons to the OBJ file.
Smooth surface geometries, for instance, are used when designing packaging to be created by injection molds, such as the plastic case of a portable CD player or for a child's doll or toy car.

 Logical Geometry
Since the ATA standard only allows a maximum of 16 for the number of heads, BIOS translation is used to reduce the number of heads and increase the number of cylinders in the specification (see here for details on this).
The translation between logical and physical geometry is the lowest level of translation that occurs when using a modern hard disk.
It is different from BIOS translation, which occurs at a higher level and is described in the next section.

Yes, these translations can be performed in both directions, but in most cases data is lost or filtered during each translation.
It should also be noted, that any translation of geometry between two CAD systems, whether using STEP, IGES, etc., requires testing to develop the right combination of parameters for each translator.
Understanding what the data will be used for, the capabilities of the CAD systems and the limitations introduced from the data translation are the key ingredients for a successful transfer.

 Hard Disk Information
As a result, drives of this size are not compatible with the system BIOS INT13h interface and the entire drive cannot be used unless geometry translation is being employed by the hard disk controller.
Geometry translation is implemented by BIOS drivers that translate the IDE hard disk's actual geometry into geometry that will fit within the system BIOS' INT13h limitations.
LBA is implemented by the system BIOS or hard disk bus adapter, which translates the CHS information that is passed to the BIOS into a 28-bit logical block address that is used by the drive to retrieve data from the disk.

 BIOS Geometry Translation
The use of logical hard disk geometry gets around the problem that physical hard disk geometries cannot be properly expressed using simple BIOS settings.
In order to get around these barriers, another layer of translation is often applied on top of the geometry translation that occurs inside the hard disk.
This translation is performed by the BIOS (or sometimes, third-party overlay software.) There are many issues involved in BIOS-level translation; the matter is discussed in detail here.

One contributing factor, perhaps the major contributing factor, to the downfall of geometry education in the United States is the way it is presented in text books.

 Logical Block Addressing
This translation may be done in the same way that it is done in Extended CHS or large mode via a drives geometry, or it may be done using a different algorithm called LBA-assist translation.
It is this translated geometry that is presented to the operating system for use in Int 13h calls.
Basically, the difference between LBA and ECHS is that when using ECHS the BIOS translates the parameters used by these calls from the translated geometry to the drive's logical geometry.

This translation however causes a problem in some systems when using a hard disk over about 4 GB in size.
When the number of cylinders on the drive is between 8,192 and 16,383, the number typically used for translation is 16.
One common way that this was done was to use 15 as the translation factor instead of 16, resulting in this sort of conversion: Of course, if you have a BIOS that doesn't know about the 256 head problem, you will need to address this with either a hardware or software solution.

 Large Disk HOWTO
The concept of `translation' was invented (1994): a BIOS could use one geometry while talking to the drive, and another, fake, geometry while talking to DOS, and translate between the two.
Disk geometry (with heads, cylinders and tracks) is something from the age of MFM and RLL.
The routine idediskentsetup() retrieves the geometry reported by the disk (which is 16383/16/63) and overwrites what the user specified on the command line, so that the user data is used only for the BIOS geometry.

Problems Using Windows 95 or MS Plus! Startup Disk
When you start your computer with the Startup disk, you may not have access to certain drives, such as CD-ROM drives, compressed drives, or logical drives located on hard disks on which geometry translation is normally performed by a real-mode driver.
If you are using a third-party software tool that requires a real-mode driver in the Config.sys file to perform geometry translation, you must manually update the Config.sys file on the Startup disk so that it loads the necessary driver.
If the third-party software tool that you are using to perform geometry translation uses a real-mode driver that is stored in the root folder of the boot drive and is loaded from the Master Boot Record, you may not be able to completely start your computer from the Startup disk.
