The first regular television transmissions in Canada began in 1952 when the CBC put two stations on the air, one in Montreal, Quebec on September 6, and another in Toronto, Ontario two days later.
Development of cable and satellite means of distribution in the 1970s pushed businessmen to target channels towards a certain audience, and enabled the rise of subscription-based television channels, such as HBO and Sky.
This control of the medium has been eroded by the increasing availability of satellite TV, and the number of satellite channels in Arabic is second only to the number of satellite channels in English, the best known of which being the Qatar-based news service Al-Jazeera.

Transmissions from the Satellite Heart was the title of the musical group The Flaming Lips' 1993 (see 1993 in music) album.
Its fourth track, "She Don't Use Jelly", is notable for being The Flaming Lips' biggest radio hit and likely their most well-known song.

Transmissions from the Satellite Heart by The Flaming Lips
Transmissions, their second major-label release after a long indie apprenticeship has a mellower feel than early fans might expect, with lots of acoustic guitar and dreamy interludes to shame More-era Pink Floyd, but it's no less weird than their last two efforts.
The Flaming Lips may be transmitting to the satellites, but when all is said and done, they live in Oklahoma.

"Transmissions..." is the record that showed the Flaming Lips were basically a great guitar pop band, albeit a very strange one.
Sure, this is the one that has the big hit ("She Don't Use Jelly") but this is one of those albums that, cliched as it may sound, needs to be listened to in its entireity to really be appreciated.
Other songs like chewin the apple of your eye, oh my pregnant head, superhumans, be my head, and moth in the incubator just don't work well.

Sadly, this wasn't the case, but it was still interesting to see records like The Flaming Lips' Transmissions From The Satellite Heart released by a giant corporation (Warner Bros. in this case).
There are a few pop gems in the vein of "Jelly" including "Turn It Up" and "Superhumans," but songs like "Oh My Pregnant Head" and "Slow Nerve Action" as as bizarre as their titles may suggest.
Transmissions From The Satellite Heart is an artistic statement by one of the nineties' most relentlessly creative bands, not just an album of weird filler book-ending a hit single.

Classic Flaming Lips craziness shines on 'Transmissions From the Satellite Heart'
In any case, the album is noticeably different from the group's definitive release, 1993's zany Transmissions From the Satellite Heart.
Transmissions was written at a time when the four-minute rock song was making a huge comeback on the radio.
Probably, but on Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, The Flaming Lips had a youthful sense of rock playfulness as well, and it sounded just as good, if not better.

And with 1993's Transmissions From The Satelite Heart they had their first hit.
True, it still includes songs called "Oh My Pregnant Head (Labia In The Sunlight)" and "Pilotcan At The Queer Of God", but despite the ever-present perverse streaks, the glorious, celebratory crunch of "When Yer Twenty-Two" is the sound of The Flaming Lips finally embracing their listener.
Transmissions From The Satellite Heart proved the detractors wrong--this is an album of incandescent loveliness and chemically-assisted good humour.

Transmissions From The Satellite Heart by Flaming Lips CD
TRANSMISSIONS FROM THE SATELLITE HEART is a perfect example of post-modern ear-candy: sour, rough and skewed on the outside, lusciously sweet and logically structure-less on the inside.
While the guitar tones are more akin to laser beams than to standard Gibsons, and the effects-laden vocals casually melt into any form of incidental noise (keyboards, feedback, whatever), songs like "Turn It On" and "She Don't Use Jelly" are nothing more than pure pop songs for now (1990s) people.
I enjoy all the albums but Transmissions From the Satellite Heart is one of the most interesting, catchy (without being annoying) and just all around perfect albums I've ever heard by anyone.

The first transmission of energy to the Earth took place on Sept. 24th, 1966.
Several times a year, a "large intergalactic spacecraft" called "Satellite No. 3" sends cosmic and solar energies which are beneficial to the human race and which are stored by the Aetherius Society in specially designed "Spiritual Energy Radiators" (Aetherius Society, "Operation Spacepower").
Its official Web page (www.aetherius.org) remains the best source of information, and explains briefly what the Society is and what its main aims are, gives a brief history of George King, and describes its major beliefs (including the option of hearing some transmissions of the cosmic masters) and its current activities (missions and pilgrimages).

 Flaming Lips at CD Universe
The Flaming Lips started out in the 1980s creating an anarchic, punky din, but eventually the psychedelic influences that had always been a major element of the band's sound became more prevalent.
In 1994, after significant lineup change, the Oklahoma group scored a hit album with TRANSMISSIONS FROM THE SATELLITE HEART.
By the turn of the decade, the Lips had mutated into a quirky but accessible outfit skillfully blending alt-rock with '60s psych-pop influences, and in 1999 reached a peak with the towering sonic statement THE SOFT BULLETIN.
