Some ILR transmitters have had modest power increases and while this will give a slightly wider coverage area, the contours will not have changed significantly in many cases.

Neighbouring transmitters use different frequencies to prevent interference and the channels have been reused up to 100 times within the country to achieve satisfactory coverage.
Before transmitters can begin broadcasting Channel 5 programmes on UHF channel 37, it must be demonstrated that 90% of all households receiving signals on this frequency will be free from potential interference.
Similarly, if a Channel 5 transmitter is causing patterning on a VCR playback picture, then a temporary solution is to unplug the aerial lead from the VCR.

Transmitter output might be restricted in one or more directions, in order to prevent interference to another service.
In the good old days, all channels from a particular transmitter were within a group, so a ‘grouped’ aerial, with less bandwidth but more gain and directivity, could be used.
When the transmitter direction is roughly at right angles to the wall the installation is very neat, protruding only about 300mm.

Frequency Finder UK - Radio 1 transmission history
Prior to launch additional Radio 1 transmitters were built for the Midlands; South Wales, Avon & Somerset; Southampton & Portsmouth; the Brighton area; the Norwich area; and Hull, all on 1214 kHz, or 247 metres as radios were calibrated in wavelengths on AM then.
The transmitters serving the North, Midlands and South East were tripled in power and new high power transmitters introduced for the South West and the North East.
Four transmitters were then ceremonially switched on through the day: Wrotham for the South East (replacing Crystal Palace), Tacolneston for Norfolk and Suffolk, Sandale for North East Cumbria and South West Scotland and Blaenplywf for Ceredigion and SW Gwynedd.

Viewers living closer to the transmitter would probably be able to swap their Group A aerial for a Group B aerial (yellow) which operates on UHF 39-53, for a better picture on C5 and a negligible reduction in quality on the other channels.
This transmitter will add over 133 000 homes to the coverage, most of which will be able to receive the service on their existing group B aerial.
However the transmitter is the opposite polarity from the others and so most homes will need to adjust their aerial if it is internal, or fit an additional aerial.

Masts of the VLF transmitter Rugby in England
For high power transmitters in the MW range, masts with lengths around half of the radiated wavelength are preferred because they focus the radiated power better to the ground than constructions with heights of quarter wavelengths, which are preferred of economical reasons for low power medium wave transmitters.
For longwave transmitters, however, the construction of masts with heights of half-wave wavelength is, because of economical reasons (and perhaps problems with the flight safety), in most cases impossible.

Even when the transmitter your aerial is pointing at is transmitting Channel 5 you may still be getting a poor picture.
If the picture quality is only slightly down on the quality of the other channels, Channel 5 transmission could be at a lower power level and you may be able to improve the picture by installing a low gain aerial amplifier.
This has come about because the new broadcasting companies, Channel 4 as well as 5, have been compelled to use frequencies outside the group the transmitter was originally scheduled to serve as there are no other analogy frequencies available.

Whilst some of the ideas were great, others weren't and the presentation was at times just a little too relaxed and not professional enough, but all in all, the station actually doesn't sound bad, and just might get another RSL licence before the Radio Authority would consider applications for a "community" licence in Falmouth.

UK DVB Scan and Channel Lists
Digital television transmitters in the UK generally have 6 multiplexes; each multiplex caries a group of channels.
A scan list gives frequencies and basic parameters for all the multiplexes on a specific transmitter.
The scan program (available as part of the linuxtv-dvb-apps package at http://www.linuxtv.org) takes this list and scans all the frequencies in it to produce a list of channel settings for that transmitter, which can then be used with media players such as xine or mplayer.
