Moldovans had warned me that hungry armed men roam the streets of Transniestria, but though the border is tense, the leafy lanes of Tiraspol were full of cafés and restaurants.
In Transniestria it helps to have a local guide who knows the restaurants and can book your meal several hours ahead, otherwise you will probably have a very long wait.
The same is true of Transniestria, Ajaria, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Nagorno-Karabakh, which also fall into a diplomatic no-man's land: Western governments don't recognise the existence of these breakaway nations, so it will be harder for them to help if you get into trouble.

Perhaps I have seen too many Cold War thrillers, but after being detained by the Transniestrian KGB for spying last autumn, I had visions of being held for years in a dark cell and having to write escape plans in blood using my toenails for nibs.
Rumours suggest it is a major producer of illegal arms, and guns from Transniestria have turned-up in conflicts around the world.

Berlusconi said that the current "governors and rulers of Moldova … feel that this arsenal (of 1500 Russian troops and much stored weaponry) should not be removed from their territory".
Of course the government of Moldova does want the Russian troops to be removed from its secessionist territory of Transniestria, whose rotten regime is being effectively protected by Russia.
The EU could contribute decisively, yet cooperatively with Russia, to settle the Transniestria affair and help a re-unified Moldova hitch on to the South East European integration train.

However the voting strength of Transnistria would be even stronger since its representatives in the federal parliament could use their votes to elect some more senators from Transnistria.
This disproportion would be even more serious still during a transitional period lasting until 2015, before which federal 'organic laws' could only be passed with a ľ majority in the senate, where Transniestria would have 34% of the seats, and therefore an outright blocking minority.
There is a similar story for the Federal Consitutional Court, which would have 6 judges appointed by the lower house, 4 by Transnistria and 1 by Gagauzia.
