Transnistrian ruble - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Transnistrian ruble is the official currency of Transnistria, an unrecognised break-away republic from Moldova, along the border with Ukraine in Eastern Europe.
Since Transnistria is an internationally unrecognized country, its currency has no ISO 4217 code and it cannot be traded outside Transnistria.
The first Transnistrian ruble was introduced in 1994 by the Transnistrian Republican Bank as the national currency of the unrecognised state of Transnistrian Moldavian Republic.

Since then, the Transnistrian question is considered a frozen conflict by the international community.
For this, the region was dependent on Kuchma's Ukraine turning a blind eye to such activities, especially as the Ukrainian port of Odessa served as a great outlet of contraband.
This puts the very existence of Transnistrian independence in peril, which in the end might trigger the change that is so long overdue.

Article - Back from the brink - News From Russia
When Russia defaulted on its government debt and the rouble started declining in August 1998, Vladimir Karnayukhov, general director of Sedmoi Kontinent, an upmarket supermarket chain in Moscow, felt the pain.
He lost money as he held prices at their previous levels for the first few days; and he lost clients in the subsequent weeks as the city's fledgling middle class was crushed by wage cuts and job losses.
The atmosphere is very different from the crisis of August 1998, when the government defaulted on its domestic bonds, the rouble went into free fall, Russian banks went bankrupt and financial markets trembled around the world.

These actions were internationally condemned, and the OSCE Mission to Moldova mediated a solution to the crisis; however, negotiations on the larger conflict have since come to a standstill.
