Transpeninsular Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Transpeninsular Line and the "Tangent Line" portion of the Mason-Dixon Line
The Transpeninsular Line (at approximately 38° 27' N) is a surveyed line, the eastern half of which forms the north-south border between Delaware and Maryland.
The line was accepted by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon (of Mason-Dixon line fame) in 1763 when they were engaged to determine the borders between Maryland and the grants to William Penn (Pennsylvania and Delaware).

The new line to be occupied by Almond's forces looped northeast from a junction with the 1st Marine Division along the Soyang to a point two miles below Yanggu, then fell off to the southeast to the existing position of the ROK 5th Division below Inje.
Implicit in Van Fleet's insistence on thorough coordination between corps during the withdrawal to the new line was that its occupation would be governed by the movement of the I Corps against the continuing enemy pressure on its front.
Van Fleet's assignment of corps sectors along the line made the IX Corps responsible for defending the Pukhan and Han corridors; consequently, the 24th Division, currently located directly above that area, was to pass to IX Corps control on the 27th.

Mason-Dixon Line   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The East-West line dividing Maryland and Delaware is called the Transpeninsular Line and was calculated from the easternmost point of the Delmarva peninsula due west to the Chesapeake Bay in 1751 by King Charles II, eleven years before the Mason-Dixon line began creation.
The object of the Transpeninsular Line was to establish a southern border of Delaware (the three lower counties of Pennsylvania).
Nowadays, the name Mason-Dixon Line is used colloquially to mean the boundary between the Northern and Southern states, or between the Union and the Confederacy during the American Civil War, or between the free states and the slave states.

A Brief History of the Mason-Dixon Surveys
The commissioners hired local surveyors to mark an east-west transpeninsular line from Fenwick Island to the Chesapeake in 1750-51, and then determine the middle point of this line, which would mark the southwest corner of the Three Lower Counties.
Since the tangency line runs slightly west of true north, the tangent point lies south and slightly east of the arc’s westernmost point (Figure 6).
After joining the tangency line perpendicularly to the twelve-mile radius line from New Castle in August 1764, they returned south to the middle point, checking and correcting marks as they went.   On this re-check, their final error at the middle point, after 82 miles, was 26 inches.
