Squawk Code - A code given by ATC to radar identify aircraft.
The function of the transponder is to transmit a signal to a ground radar station.
In the IFR environment your transponder is your link to the outside world, you can be in the clouds for hours on end without worrying about running into anything because you know that ATC is tracking your aircraft's transponder.

 Transponder Signals and Prefix Codes
Because transponder codes are normally broadcast over subspace, they can be used to locate a ship over very long distances, and therefore overcome many of the limitations of sensor systems.
Transponder codes can be extremely useful when a group of ships are acting together, since they enable the fleet's commander to instantly identify each vessel under his or her command and to see exactly how they are deployed.
Transponders are invaluable in this kind of situation, because if a ship is severely damaged it may not be generating any of the energy signatures that can be used to locate vessels.

Access control equipment and method for using the same - Patent 5339073
Transponders 1 to 8 are coded 000 to 111, so that transponder 6 holds the code 101 and transponder 8 holds the code 111: these are the only two transponders which are present.
The transponders utilised in the invention are desirably encapsulated transponders as described in GB-A-2164825, but utilising either a microchip processor and memory or customised large scale integrated circuits instead of the logic elements shown in that document.
Each transponder may or may not incorporate its own battery, but if a battery is incorporated the transponder is capable of switching from and to a standby, power conserving mode in response to the presence or absence of a signal from the interrogation unit.

Transponder code - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki
A transponder code was a signal burned into the starship's sublight engines that transmitted the ship's name, type, owner, and other pertinent data.
Though in use since the beginning of spacefaring societies, transponder codes could be duplicated or removed, though the procedures involved were difficult, expensive, and highly illegal.
IFF transponders could also be used to trick enemies into firing on each other by using an IFF transponder scramble command.

Transponder (aviation) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The aviation transponder was originally developed during World War II by the British and American military as an "Identification - Friend or Foe (IFF)" system to differentiate friendly from enemy aircraft on radar.
Pilots are instructed not to place the transponder in "standby mode" while changing the codes as it causes the loss of target information on the ATC radar screen, but instead to carefully change codes to avoid inadvertently selecting an emergency code [1].
Otherwise the squawk codes are randomly allocated (hence not assigned in sequence).

EPA: Federal Register: Transponder Continuous Operation
The designated hijack alert code is ``7500,'' which is defined in section 2.1.4 of Volume IV of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 10 as the appropriate code to indicate to ATC that an aircraft is being subjected to unlawful interference.
Deactivation of the ATC transponder by means of removal of significant airplane electrical power to the detriment of airplane operations or obtaining access to a part of the airplane normally not accessible by the crew, are not considered reasonable.
The transponder could be removed from the airplane in a matter of minutes, replaced by a substitute transponder while the software upgrades were implemented (airlines indicated an abundance of transponders), and then reinstalled.
