There are two main roads on Rarotonga, you can circle the island on the Ara Tapu sealed road, through the villages and past the beaches; or you can take the older inland road, which winds through fields of taro, pawpaw, bananas and local farmlands.
A variety of transport options are available, from rental bicycles, motor bikes or cars, to public buses.
You can hail the bus to stop from anywhere on the main road, and as there are two buses running in opposite directions around the island, you never need to wait more than about 30min for the next to come along.

The prime minister says he also plans to ask the Chinese government whether they are interested in helping out with inter-island sea transport in the Cook Islands on a joint venture basis and will discuss the possibility of the Chinese setting up a full embassy here.
Other discussions will centre on the $4.8 million Rarotonga courthouse project which is expected to be completed later in the year and a new headquarters for the Cook Islands Police Service which will also be funded and built by the Chinese government.

A government source says the New Zealand government is "not impressed" with the Cooks government deviating from policies of the ongoing economic reform by entering into the shipping business through the Cook Islands Investment Corporation and trying to outlaw companies in competition with its political mates.
The Atiu Island Council voted for a 7.2 metre barge because they thought that this was the maximum size of barge that could easily be handled on the wharf of Atiu.
She was referring in particular to the participants in the Cook Islands' first Olympic Solidarity Handball course which ends at the Avatiu Recreation Centre and grounds this week.

Transport Minister Mark Gosche said that the new agreement, the first open skies agreement which New Zealand has signed with a Pacific Island partner, provides for the possible development of new routes and/or new operators according to commercial demand.
