It was founded as the Staatsmuseum (Afrikaans for "State Museum") of the ZAR on the 1 December 1892.
The Transvaal Museum was amalgamated with the Pretoria-based National Cultural History Museum (also called the African Window) and the South African National Museum for Military History (situated in Johannesburg) on 1 April 1999 to form the Northern Flagship Institution.

The fossil came from Sterkfontein Cave and was attributed to the genus Australopithecus africanus (STS 5).
It was this notion that I became interested in and with samples obtained from the Transvaal Museum, I proceeded to test the relationship of sex and Sr/Ca discrimination among a large sample of Parapapio broomi fossils (baboons) from Swartkrans Cave.
The visit to the Transvaal Museum allowed me the opportunity to further explore the sexual attributions of the P. broomi samples in my study and to examine the sex of the Australopithecus robustus samples used in Sillen's earlier analysis.

The Transvaal Museum is working in collaboration with scientists from many institutions, locally and abroad, and new techniques are being made available to study fossils in novel ways.
Today we are particularly pleased that the real "Mrs Ples" has come out of her strong room - or rather out of the "Broom Room", giving South Africans an opportunity to see the original specimen, as part of a programme of events marking the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of "Mrs Ples".
Last month at the Transvaal Museum, more than 12 000 children with many different backgrounds were exposed to the story of "Mrs Ples".

Several specimens of this insect were collected and preserved in museums, but they looked so similar to other giant stick insects that it required an expert to recognize that this is a new species of stick insect.

After a 23 hour bus ride all the way across the country, I arrived in Pretoria, eager to get to work at the Transvaal Museum and happy that the temperatures were much warmer.
The Transvaal Museum houses one of the largest collections of hominid fossils in the world and is rivaled only by The University of Witwatersand in the extensive material originating from the nearby cave sites, including Swartkrans and Sterkfontein.

The meteor crater, and the natural area surrounding it have a cultural and ecological importance to the local communities, and the 10 main communities of have been working through the process of co-creating and co-managing this shared resource.
Both the Transvaal Museum of Natural History and the Cultural History Museum in Pretoria have been assisting the process -- which is very much still ongoing.
She is also working with the museum educators and the local teachers to put some active education lessons together for their use.

 The Missing Link Found In South Africa?
They were both palaeontologists from the Transvaal Museum at the time.
By studying past environments we are  better able to understand  the factors which contributed to the emergence of a  Mrs Ples and the skull of a chimpanzee new species and also why certain species became extinct.
At the Transvaal Museum in Pretoria, we are reminded that without the ingenuity of the Mrs Ples' of yesteryear, many of our technological advances would not have been possible.

 Mrs Ples and our distant relatives
"Mrs Ples" is the nickname for a fossil that was discovered by Dr Robert Broom of the Transvaal Museum at the Sterkfontein Caves in 1947.
The very first flat-faced "robust" hominid was discovered in 1938 by a schoolboy, Gert Terblanche, at Kromdraai, where the Transvaal Museum continues to undertake excavations.
My dream of having one copy of Mrs Ples per school in the country within a period of 20 years is an attainable objective, one that may help to stimulate new young minds to turn to palaeontology as a career, to address many of the challenging questions which are currently being raised by new discoveries.

 The Mother Of The Nation
Pressure from inter alia the Board of the Transvaal Museum forced Broom to turn his attention elsewhere and he started with excavations on a farm named Kromdraai approximately a kilometre from Sterkfontein.
Since they did not have a camera with them and they were situated 48km from Johannesburg and 64km from Pretoria, they had to drive to a neighbouring farm to phone The Star to send a photographer to come and take the photographs.
Afterwards Broom carefully removed the chunk of rock in which the lower part of the skull was embedded and took both parts to the Transvaal Museum where he prepared it.
