Transverse engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A transverse engine is an engine in which the crankshaft is oriented side-to-side relative to the wheels of the vehicle.
He connected the engine to its gearbox by a shaft and set the differential off-center so that it could be connected to the gearbox more easily.
The Lamborghini Miura used a transverse, mid-mounted 4.0 litre V12, a configuration that was unheard of in 1965.

Transverse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term transverse means "side-to-side", as opposed to longitudinal, which means "front-to-back".
In automotive engineering, the term transverse refers to an engine in which the crankshaft is oriented side-to-side relative to the wheels of the vehicle.

 SAE Paper # 820441
In the fall of 1980 the engine displacement of the 4-cylinder engine was increased by lengthening the engine stroke from 80 to 86.4 mm.
The engine is transversely mounted in the Rabbit and Jetta vehicles.
As in the case of the 4-cylinder engine the stroke is 86.4 and the bore is 76.5 mm, resulting in a total engine displacement of 1986 cc.

New Volvo V50 - Sportswagon with Turbo and AWD
The new petrol engines in the Volvo V50 (and the new S40) are a further development of the low-friction engines that power the large Volvo models.
The result is an engine that is 200 mm slimmer and 25 mm shorter than the one in the large Volvo models.
Combined with Volvo’s transverse engine installation concept, it also contributes to a high level of crash safety, as there is added space for deformation in the engine compartment.

Engine, gearbox, drive shafts, brakes and suspension were all scrap parts, not the kind of stuff a Grand Prix team normally uses.
Transverse means the engine is mounted not lengthwise but across the engine bay, with the gearbox behind it.
Transverse engines are usually found in small cars so the power plant might not be beefy enough for a race car.

An engine in which the cylinders occur in a single row with the crankshaft running along the bottom.
An engine that works on power released by vapourized fuel and air burning inside the engine itself, rather than on an outside source of combustion as, for example, a steam engine does.
An engine in which the cylinders occur in two rows set at an angle to each other, with the crankshaft running through the point of the V. The most popular engine of this type is the 8-cylinder V-8 engine.

Automotive Engineering International Online: Transmission options
For lower-torque applications in association with four-cylinder engines, current automatic transmissions, such as Honda and Saturn four-speed units, have designs similar to manual transmissions with the synchronizer replaced by wet clutches.
Current CVTs are installed mainly in mini, small, and lower midsize cars with 1.0- to 1.6-L gasoline engines, though the trend is toward higher engine torque and CVT capacities.
The motivation for adopting CVTs in front-transverse drivelines, combined with four- and six-cylinder engines from 1.8- to 2.8-L displacements, is greater fuel economy and lower emissions, as well as fulfillment of consumers' expectations for the comforts of automatic transmissions.

Automotive Engineering International Online: Transmission options
Two major market trends are affecting the design of manual transmissions: higher-output diesel engines, which are available mainly in Europe, require much higher torque capacities than was previously the case; and the need for higher fuel efficiency and fewer emissions, as well as desire for greater prestige, are driving the use of six forward speeds.
This leads to an installation problem in the engine compartment that is solved only by a modified design, especially in connection with higher-performance vehicles with five- or six-cylinder engines.
For longitudinal engines, double-clutch transmissions with dry and wet clutches (the latter with hydrodynamic torque converters) have been closely examined and tested by the industry.

 DOCTOR RADIATOR
When a radiator is operating properly, it extracts the engine’s waste heat from the coolant and transfers it to the outside air.
At that point the engine’s electric cooling fan should be turning to pull cool air over the hot radiator tubes; it is not.
While this can be one by letting the engine heat up and the coolant pressurize, it is safer and easier to use a pressure tester.

The engine is made specifically for the XC90, though Volvo intends to use it in other models such as the S80 saloon.

The idea is to fit an adaptor plate between the engine and gearbox which has the bolt holes advanced round on one side by about 15 to 20 degrees.
When fitted the engine remains at the same angle as in its original setting but the gearbox is at an angle relative to its original setting.
But in a mid engine position: why don't you take the entire engine/transaxle and rotate it around the axis of the crankshaft (by 15 degrees or so) so that the head is angled more forwards and the half-shafts would be more up in the rear.

I've never owned a car, and I don't know how often my brother had his Ford Cortina 2000GT overhauled (I don't think my sister-in-law knows either; she sold it shortly after my brother's death), but I still think that the longivity of the V-8s are due to their low stresses and their simple designs.
I also think that the older engines were overdesigned to ensure reliability, whereas today's designers stress efficiency and take engines closer to the edge.
