Tranz Rail, properly Tranz Rail Holdings Limited, was the name of the main rail operator in New Zealand from 1995 until it was purchased by Toll Holdings in 2003.
Tranz Rail, in partnership with Wisconsin Central as the Australian Transport Network Limited, invested in Tasmanian rail operator TasRail in 1997.
Tranz Rail won the Roger Award for The Worst Transnational Corporation operating in New Zealand on three occasions and was the first corporation inducted into the "hall of shame".

Tranz Rail was fined $15,000 today after being prosecuted by the Occupational Safety and Health Service (OSH).

Now, Tranz Rail has issued a letter that had been given to schools to pass on to their students in response to "fare evasion, misuse of Term Passes and bad behaviour".
This is because many older commuters don't wish to share the trains with students as students, being young people, are generally louder and more energetic (but not necessarily badly behaved), and see their journey on the train as a social gathering, not a quiet time to read a book as many adults see it.
To have an end to both of these problems would be good, but I think that Tranz Rail should solve the problem with its own people before it starts complaining about increases in bad behaviour among students.

As Toll Holdings' bid for Tranz Rail slows to a stand off with Tranz Rail's institutional shareholders, American rail operator Genesee and Wyoming has been talking to the shareholders and could launch a rival bid for Tranz Rail within days.
Toll's rail business in Australia, Pacific National, is a joint venture with Patrick Corporation bought only last year and in which Patrick is seen as the rail expert.
In its report on that offer, Grant Samuel valued Tranz Rail at 97 cents to $1.03 a share - but that valuation was done under the assumption that the government's initial offer had been accepted.
